I just bought a new headlamp, a Skilhunt H04R. I want to use it on my Fox Flux helmet. So far i've had two ideas for mounting.

First, I just use the original headband like this (on the sides I route the band inside the helmet, I was just too lazy to do it for the picture):

It's okay, but not the best solution. The light is protected nicely which I like. But it's not that stable, it tends wiggle a bit, and it wants to ride up, the visor can't really keep it down. Also, since all the weight is on the front of the helmet, the helmet wants to rotate forward and slide down on my forehead, so I have to lift it up now and then.

I also made a little wooden thingy so I can mount the light on the top of the helmet with reusable zip ties:

It's very stable, the weight is centered. My biggest issue is that our trails are pretty much completely unmaintained, and i'm a 110% sure i'm gonna hit a branch with the light if I use it like this. I'm also not that stoked on putting pressure on the helmet with those zip ties.

Do you guys have any other ideas for mounting this light on my helmet? I think mounting the light on the front under the visor would be the way to go, i'm just not sure how I should do it.

Industrial strength Velcro.

VELCRO Brand Heavy Duty Tape with Adhesive | 15 Ft x 2 In | Holds 10 lbs, Black | Industrial Strength Roll, Cut Strips to Length | Strong Hold for Indoor or Outdoor Use https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00006RSP1/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_PDKQ73VXVHQTAJ9G6N4D
That's a good idea. I'm guessing I should put the velcro on the silicon part on the headband (and on the helmet of course), and mount the light like on the first pic?
I could see that working, but I think i'll have to buy another headband, because I also use the light like a "regular headlight", and I think the velcro would be quite uncomfortable on my forehead. :) Not the end of the world tho.

If you use a small block of styrofoam, it will conform and compress to the shape of the helmet and light a lot better than your "wood thingy". It also won't scratch the helmet.

I did something similar for my GoPro. This was before the days of great mounts. I used a velcro strap and a small piece of cardboard. Easy on / off. Worked perfectly.

I glued an inner tube on the bottom of the wood block, so it doesn't scratch the helmet and grips the surface better. It's just a "prototype", I thought about shaping the bottom of the block to the helmet, IF I commited to the idea of mounting the light like this.
But the styrofoam is a good idea and it's probably lighter than wood, so thanks for the suggestion! I didn't think about that.

But again, my main issue is that the light is gonna catch a branch and get damaged if I mount it on the top of the helmet. I regularly head butt branches as is... 😁 Everything is so overgrown here.

Top photo is just on old band helmet mount and a Gloworm stretchy velcro buckle strap wrapped through the mount that holds the light against the mount tower and its base. Here's an amazon link but quite sure you can find something similar for less if you look around.

Next photo is an Armytek mount that worked greaat with a Sofirn light I had but snapped in half when I tried it with a Astrolux torch that had a slightly larger battery tube. Nice option if it fits but risky IMO. Both should work with a head strap under the visor like your preferred setup.

Not the best picture, but I use Legos as a mount for my light. It's great because it can be customized to match the best angle for the light. Then I just have it generic strap to hold it down. It's actually the best mount that I've had so far, even compared to commercial options. It's sits very low on the helmet, which minimizes the feel of it on my head.

What does the TIR lens do...guessing maybe less throw?

I noticed the H04R has the silicon loops to hold it in place and the H04R RC has some sort of snap in holder. I wonder which one will hold the light in position better and not allow it to move?

H04R

H04R RC
Much more flood, less throw, very soft "edges". It's what the H04 comes stock with. Still experimenting with what I like more.

AFAIK in theory all H04 lamps should come with the plastic holder. But in reality it depends on what the shop sends you that you bought the light from. To me the plastic holder looks better. From what i've read the plastic holder is very secure, and you can also put an O-ring on it for extra safety.

Nope, there are now two holders for the H04, the standard silicon loops (2) and a newish clip in holder (maybe only on RC magnetic charging models). I wonder which is best for mountain biking, holding in place and allowing light direction to easily adjusted.
