Trying to talk a friend into it- I'd like to take your Top 3 (or more if you want) and make a top 10 list.

I'd rather not rummage thru that long freaking sticky at the top.

Thanks,

fp

1. Fun.
2. You are doing interval training without knowing it.
3. Having a nice spare bike.
4. Beating friends on a SS is always fun too.

On a side note : Learning other riding techniques, like SS or fixed gear actually improves your performence on the geared mtb.

1) I can be lazy and not maintain it as much as my full-sqiush.
2) It makes me feel manly at the top of every climb.
3) Riding SS is really, really fun. It makes me ride better and the simplicity frees up more of my consciousness to enjoy the world around me.

Just get your friend on a SS for a few rides, that should do the trick.

currently living in michigan where it is flat as hell and no need for the 3x9 drivetrain i used in utah for more than a decade. good for muddy conditions. it is very quiet on the trail. light weight. ditto on some of the other reasons posted above.

I just started, but here's what I've got so far...

1] great way to get acquainted with the attributes of 29er wheel/tires
2] simple and quiet = feels "pure"...
3] the fun is the challenge of almost always being in the wrong gear, and making it work!

:p
