I had an awsome idea to build a foam pit.
First-build a huge wooden box about 18 foot across,18 foot long 4 feet deep About($60-$70)
Second-buy a bunch of pillow cases.($20-$25)
Third-buy four 18 cubic foot blocks of packing peanuts($180)
Fourth-fill pillow cases with packing peanuts and put them in your cube.
Fifth-have fun!

Awsome foam pit for under $300

ill probably be building mine this spring :)

P.S. for those of you that dont have a ramp lying around build one of those to :D

Not trying to rain on your parade. Your price for the wood seems a bit on the low side. You would need about 10 sheets of plywood: $200+ and some support wood: another $60+. The pillow cases for $25 seems even more off. After you build your box you will wind up with 1024 cubic feet of space to fill with pillows about 1024 (probably more like 1500) of them since they are less then 1square foot each. At the cheapest at Kmart you might get 2 for $10 at a cost of $5000-$7000.

If you get wood for free, why did you say it would cost $60-$80 or something to get the wood?

Does the wholesale packing supply company's prices include shipping? Might be something to look into...

Would packing peanuts work as well as foam would? Seems like they would get broken down over time, maybe not though, I haven't tried that.

You could just build a jump out of bark (the landing), not as soft as foam or anything, but still works and you can ride out, it's also a helluva lot cheaper.

Good luck, post pics of it when you make it...

Well i posted price on the wood to give a general idea on price and here the packing peanuts link http://pacnseal.com/packing_peanuts.html yes they include shipping but i might try talking to fedex to see if i can work with them for super cheap packing peanuts!

P.S. the pillow cases were a bad idea i think industrial trash bags would work better!

I don't want to spoil your great idea, but i calculated that your box will be 1296 (18ft*18ft*4ft) cubic feet, so you would need to spend $3236 on just the little peanuts at the price on that website.

That's not really a good idea at all man. I hate to burst your bubble, but packing peanuts crush and don't return to their original size, pillow cases would easily be ripped by pedal pins and other sharp things, and trash bags would burst from the impact of someone coming down on it. Not to mention way more $ for wood as has been previously stated.

Rent a backhoe, dig a hole. Line the hole with plastic pond liner. Fill with jell-o. Once the jell-o sets, jump away!

Use the dirt from the hole to build sweet jumps!

Post pics of the 3 feet of air you get.

Hey, How about you fill the pit with those balls that are in kids rides at chunk-e-cheese. I imagine it would be a nice soft landing (seriously). And you can charge the local kids to play in it in-between sessions to pay off the cost. ;)
yeah or water ballons.....yeah that would last forever
