I ordered a tire from pricepoint in cali....I'm in Idaho.....just checked my tracking # and my tire is in Kentucky (sp). WTF, it could have been here sooner if not for the US tour. Now to do the 2 day it has to fly back to Boise.

Louisville KY is UPS's main air hub. Everything goes in then gets sorted then flys out in less then 4 hours. I work for UPS.

Air shipping all gets routed through a central distribution center. UPS may have more than one.

FedEx sends all of their overnight shipping to Knoxville (?) and back out even if it is going from Portland to Seattle.

Too funny...I was just wondering the same thing. I ordered a wheelset and some other stuff from Webcyclery in Bend, OR via 2-Day UPS. I live in SoCal. I tracked it and couldn't figure out why it spent a few hours at the horsetrack in Kentucky.

fedex is usually so much faster than UPS.. every single time I order from fedex I get the package a day early. might just be my luck.. UPS.. never see it till the day it supposed to be there.. or the day after.

I can't speak for the merchant you chose, but many hold their inventory at or adjacent to UPS facilities at the big KY hub. You might also notice that the assembly, repair, return and warranty operations for many products are in same area. The nation has a hub and spoke air travel and distribution system in general so you will see that even if your merchant does not hold inventory there.

Put another way. Do you know what a plane and truck cost? Think how much you shipping would be if one of each was dedicated just to you or your neighborhood.

Due to major reliability issues with UPS, I've switched my business and personal shipping needs to DHL. I've had 3 different UPS drivers in 1 year. The UPS driver would sometimes pop his head in my office and quickly slip away without delivering my packages. I chased him down to his truck a few times and he had a lame excuse saying he didn't think I was in.

Twice I've caught the truck outside my building and asked if I was receiving a package. When they said no, I insisted they check again. Both times the online shipping tracker said it was out for delivery. Lo' and behold, my package was on the truck.

Since I went DHL, I've had no shipping & receiving problems and it is considerably cheaper.

I've ordered stuff from Jenson and normally it takes one small detour, but basically comes straight to my house which is about 30 miles away. If I order Sunday night the stuff shows up on Tuesday. This has been really consistant until a recent order when I saw that initially the estimated delivery was Tuesday, like normal, and then the tracking didn't show anything for a while. The next entry was Sacramento, which is about 400 miles out of the way. The estimated delivery now showed Friday and it did show up then after a little tour of California.

They've never lost anything though.

I think UPS reliability has been going downhill. I've had several orders come in damaged or just outright lost in the past few months. They once obviously dropped something (smashed the bottom of the box and the item) cut the top open to inspect it and taped it back up without saying a thing when they delivered it. The shipper wasn't too surprised but they confirmed that the box had been resealled by UPS. And they fight tooth and nail with claims, which makes you wonder why you even bothered to buy insurance.

FedEx's main hub is Memphis.
Couple hundred aircraft out twice a day wearing FedEx logos.

UPS logo sucks

I think they should have stuck with the one Paul Rand designed. I like the FedEx purple and orange better anyway.

* Oh and yeah they jack up packages all the time. A friend of mine worked for them for 3 months and quit. the job sucks and no one cares about taking care of anything... they just throw stuff around and laugh... all they want to do is go home.

I've had pretty good luck with UPS overall, they have only pissed me off a couple of times.
But Fed Ex on the other hand I've had nothing but bad luck with, they just about never get the package to me on time. DHL is great though, super fast shipping through them.

Seems like depending on region some carriers are better than others. In my area UPS usually delivers 1-2 days earlier than scheduled. Fedex on the scheduled day- just the packages are alway crushed and bent. DHL and Airborne can't seem to find my address- they are pretty worthless here.
