It was too good of a deal, brand new take off's for cheaper than wholesale, so yeah, I bought them. I know they aren't everybody's "favorite" or "preferred" tire, but with supply and whatnot I took them. 27.5 x 3.8" for what it is worth

So I'm running a 45Nrth Van Helga up front, which of these two (FBF/FBR) would be the lesser of two evils on the rear end?

Depends on what your idea of evil is.
fair point. Mostly going with what I've heard and read that the FBF/FBR are not the best tires out there.

Will I see snow? very little if any. Possibly a very groomed trail, or well packed in trail, but that is very slim chances. I might ride local trails that would be snowed in for a day or two, and then dry with icy patches here and there. I do not ride hard.
Location, western CO/eastern Utah desert areas.

My Suzi Q came w/ 27.5 x 3.8 FBF's both Front and Rear. They do just fine on dirt. They are not very good in the snow. I currently run hodag's on my lighter wheelset for 4 season riding, and a set of studded gnarwhals when it gets icy. The hodag is a much better overall tire.

But, if you are getting the maxxis tires for a drastic discount. Role em like you stole em.

I have a pair of FBR 3.8's since the price offa eBay was cheap and there is a ~200g lighter bonus for the non EXO version. Also have a pair of FBF prototypes but they are stiff as hell and ride quality is meh.

Tires in Sarge III's closet are;

Van Helga 1st gen.
FBR 3.8 non-EXO
Duro Crux 3.25

Sarge III has Alex Rims 27.5 x 70mm rims. (i64)
Frankly, I like all of them for varying reasons and uses. Sarge III is a rigid with a 510mm A/C aluminum fork. Ride feel is similar to a plus bike but has bonus flotation for the loose terrain to be a non issue, within reason. Snow, sand, loam. Jeepin's never been so good!

Edit:
Fatness from smaller volume to larger is Crux, FBR, VH.
Hodag? Give mikesee a shout, he may have em in stock.

The maxxis twins catch their share of hate on theses pages, but I ran em for years and am fairly sure I was having a good time. They’re cheap, tough as nails and give the rear end a fun drifty feel. Not as fun when the front drifts, but that shouldn’t be an issue with VH on the front

Any updates?

I have the same tires, but the frame for the second bike to build up isn't here, yet.

Inquiring minds, yanoo?!?!?!
I have them. They are in the box they shipped in :)
I'm so behind/lazy right now. I think my first step would be dry mount the tire and see how close I can mount it in the dropout before it hits the seattube...

Snatch in the box?

Or tires?

What?!?!?!?

Between you and me ... this is gonna be like one of those 10 mile long races on the interstate to see if the truck that has the speed limiter 2 mph faster will make his pass stick ... at the dismay of many waiting motorists.

So I mounted the tire to the rim, tubed cuz I'm not ready to finalize. 25psi. Wheel fits with some extra wiggle room slammed in the dropouts. So far I'll call it a success.

I forgot if I mentioned earlier but it is a Surly Wednesday, and I'm hoping to run singlespeed as much as possible, hence ideally being able to run as short as possible.
