This a.m., it was a bermed, slightly soft downhill curve on DC. Ridden it a thousand times. Tried pushing it just a teeeeeeny bit faster than usual, and the surface and tire parted ways.

Trail rash up my entire left side. Jacked my shoulder. Jacked my head hard enough to trigger a migraine (I'm stoned to the gills on Relpax right now!). Might have cracked a tooth. Destroyed a helmet.

Looking at the damage you'd think I'd just failed to gap Snake River or something, but no. Desert f*cking Classic strikes again. :madman:

Thats a bummer Paul.

It seems that often the crashes that hurt are those that occur when one thinks its easy going. Perhaps its because one becomes complacent.

Helmets aren't BS, even when tooling around in the back yard, although I have to be reminded of that sometimes.

Heal up dude.

*sigh* Paul, you totally blew a great MTBR opportunity. You should've posted how you were gaping some crazy ass thing, cleared it, but took a digger on the landing. You could've then posted pics of your injuries and helmet as proof. But instead you opted to tell the TRUTH. Now that golden opportunity is gone. Nice job. I blame the drugs. :p ;)

Seriously though, feel better soon. Just don't do the same thing in 2 weeks.

ouch!

some of my most painful crashes have been on "easy" sections of DC. speed kills, but it sure is fun. heal up dude, or we will have to add you to the bizarre love triangle of DurtGurl and CactusJoe. :winker:

hey where has CactusJoe been - he's taking all this abuse so passively :eekster: . did he break his tongue too? you dont need a pinkie for typing, but then again, he's an IT guy they pretty much do their jobs w. only 1 finger - either the left mouse, or the middle one :D :ciappa: .

I did the same thing a week ago Monday morning. That crash caused me to miss the Quad bypass ride last Saturday. That ain't gonna happen again. I am riding with knee pads from how on. Yes, even on DC. Make sure you laugh at me if you see me come August...

Aw! Thanks for all the nice notes. I don't feel any less stupid (wreck spot's about on-par with slipping in wet grass onto concrete), but it's nice to know I'm not the only stupid crasher out there.

I was thinking it's been maybe a year since my last wreck. I've had a terrific run for many months now, almost exclusively on the 29er hardtail. And the reason I pushed so hard into this turn was that I was marveling at how great the bike was hooking up. How hot can I take this turn? Too hot!

Feels like the longest-term damage will be my shoulder, and maybe some swelling in my left hip. Everything else looks to be surface damage. A shower, some Advil, and a breakfast beer later and it didn't look so bad after all.

In better news, it sure feels GOOD to be back on a singlespeed. I'd forgotten how much fun they are.

Exactly the reason helmets are a good idea...

Marveling will get you everytime! :)

One of my worst crashes was on DC. Amy & I were on a full moon NR and were having a great time. On the return, just east of the water tank I had turned my light off and was all giddy with the full moon (marveling :) ) and I started cranking it up when I hit that sandy spot that's sort of carved in, but I couldn't really make out the different depths by moon light only and I caught an edge with the front tire and before I knew it BAM! Amy rode up to a wall of dust and me sprawled across the trail with a broken light mount, some crushed jewels and some serious "road" rash. The seriousness of the crash wasn't because of the surface but the speed and unexpected nature of it.

She told me later that the only reason she stopped was not because she saw me but because she couldn't see me and guessed by the haboob in front of her that I must be under there somewhere!

I followed HER and her light back to the car nice and slow...

29er hardtail...mmmm....

Thursday AM ride on DC....

Breakfast beer...mmmm....

Tell me again what was the BAD part of your story???

The crash is your bike's way of telling you that you want some expensive new tires and a shock rebuild.

I just crashed my brains out at Papago a couple of hours ago. Same deal, pushing too hard through a soft curve and I ate sh**. I smacked the side of my face so hard it looks like someone punched me. My knee was bleeding so much I had to wipe down my shoes once I got back to the car. At Papago! Seriously?!

Last week, National go me, but at least it was National.

Dude, Snake River story would have worked perfectly in this situation as well....

On another note, I was at Dreamy the other day, and as soon as I got off the trail and onto the paved path, I railed myself hard on a pile of yote crap. I think I cracked a few ribs....

The way I look at it, fellow mtbers will still laugh at you. People who don't know any better will still be saying, "you're crazy."
