I am a serial barb and olive murderer.

Get new brakes. Hoses are too long.

Cut hoses add new barb and olive. Reinstall everything and bleed brakes if needed. My first cut is always too long without fail. Always. I never get it right on the first cut for fear of cutting the hose too short. Never.

It will be close. Good enough I think. I give it a ride then my OCD kicks in with that little bit of extra hose sticking out front mocking me the whole ride and I get a new set of barb/olives and shorten the lines again. Most of the time I get it right on the 2nd cutting but not always. Always the fear of cutting the line too short.

I need a minimum of 2 barbs and olives per brake to get it right. One would think I would eventually get better at eyeballing and dry fitting the brake line but I still always cut the line too long without fail.

I am the Ted Bundy of barb and olives.

Attach the olive and connect it to the lever and then slide the hose into the frame or backwards until it's where you like it. Then work any slack backwards and cut and attach to the caliper. Assuming you are installing a new hose and not working with a pre bled set up that you unhook at the lever.

Or buy them in sets of 10 or 20 from China or Ebay so they are cheap and on hand?
@DeoreDX You must be a sucker for punishment, I think fitting barbs into brake hoses must be one of the worst jobs to do on the bike especially once you get a bit of oil on your hands. It is worth it though not have a birds nest of cables and hoses in front of your bike.
Sort of like post #3, I just cut, physically hold it into it's home, eyeball, move bars back and forth, repeat until I like it.

I have this tool and it makes cutting the hose an adding a barb a simple 15-20 second operation.

Thanks for the link, looks like a good option. I think I will get one of those.
