Is now the best time to buy?
I'm trying to find a nice inexpesive HT to keep my FS company in the garage. Componants mean more than brand name, so if you know of any deal going on right now, please post the link. I found these three so far. Trying to keep it under $1500.

I've found the deeper into winter you go, the lower the prices get on last years models but at the same time the slimmer the pickins get.

The happy median would actually be around Nov I believe but that would depend on your area/climate.

I hate making decisions. I wish there was a Bike Guru who says, "OK..knowing how you ride, what you make and what you can afford, buy this bike".
Since there is not, I had to do all the research. Part by part, pros and cons, knick for knack, reading the reviews, calling friends, talking to strangers and a few sleepless nights.
I made quicker decisions on my motorcycle, truck and house for goodness sake!

I will be the proud owner of the Fly Team in mid to late March.

Things to look in HT

Hope this information will be helpful for HT shopper.
Things that I look in HT.
1. Shock with lockout (makes climbs efficient0
2. Shock travel 80-100mm
3. Disc brakes (mech or hydraulics) great for wet weather and long steep downhills
4. Strong wheelset if you are a heavy rider or do some jumps.
5. get a longer wheelbase for stable climbs and faster/stable straight downhills
6. get a shorter wheelsbase for dowhnhill maneuvrability (switchbacks)
Note that wheelset gets a lot of beating on HT
rest of the components are matter of personal preference and money availbale

You can achieve above requirement as low as $550 Gary Fisher Piranha (100mm oil shock with lockout Deore components) http://fisherbikes.com/bikes/full_specs.asp?series=genesis&bike=Piranha
or $1300 specilaized Stumpjumper HT Disc (90mm air FOX F90RL with lockout best XC fork in my opinion with LX/XT mix http://specialized.com/bc/SBCBkModel.jsp?spid=21818&bikeTab=techspec
I have both bikes and both perform pretty much the same, I like the lockout better on F90RL, and Stumpjumper (25lb) is about 2lbs lighter then Piranha (27lb). of course as afr as components (other then shock) FLY is better then Stumpjumper
If getting mech disc brakes best bang for the buck are Avid BB7, easy to maintain and adjust.
As far as upgrades the best upgrade that can make difference during the ride are shock and wheelset.
