I add water to my flasks (3/4 gel, 1/4 water) and shake, shake, shake.
+1, thats all you need.
thanks guys...appreciate the responses

Three big pluses to prepping your gels that way:

1- easier than fiddling w/ opening the gel packet while riding

2- easier to consume when diluted

3- you can mix flavors (e.g. vanilla bean and chocolate mix well together)

oh, and number 4... you'll NEVER drop a gel pack on the ground if you don't carry it onto the trail in the first place. Littering sucks, should be punishable by death, or at least severe public humiliation.
can anyone comment on whether or not this method will make them more likely to freeze/get thick in cold weather?

this is my main concern/what I was hoping the thread was about
They will both freeze, but w/ the gelflasks you have more volume so it takes longer. individual gels are a pain in freezing weather. I have also added hot water to the flask, although it is very little, on really cold days.
Try to store the flask near your body when it's butt freezing cold.
I've been doing both things you suggest- good advice. let me also add that some of the flavors are thinner than others- raspberry is pourable much colder than espresso... but when its cold who doesn't want an espresso?
you

might want to try First Endurance's Liquid Shot. Lots of calories like Gu, but thinner and easier to swallow/flow. They also claim faster absorbtion. I love it for long ride fueling.

If you water down GU until it has the same calories per ounce as FE Liquid Shot, it'll be thinner and easier to swallow, too. ;)
thinning with a little Oban might work :yikes:

That is incorrect.
Really? How so? Are you suggesting that if you water GU down it doesn't get thinner and easier to swallow? Note: I did not say it was AS easy or AS thin as First Endurance.

Trust me, I use a 5 shot flask worth of 4 GU packs plus enough water to fill all the time and it IS much thinner and easier to swallow than before watering it down.

Been doing some research on gu's etc.....for all of us health consience people!, don't be fooled anymore! 2nd ingredient is fructose, fructose builds a layer of "frucFAT" around a body's organs! Our organs function for a purpose, put a coat of vasaline on your entire body and go baby go! Same thing.... I've been a gu user for years recently bought 6 boxes, also bought a few boxes of e-gel "no caffine" anybody wanna buy them cheap???? Maybe diluted they won't b so hard on our body's??? Why do things from batteries to gu contain "fructose" "high fructose" "crystaline fructose" etc.... Cuz it's cheap and really bad for us! Infact the ingredient list on the "gu website" states all the good stuff but fails to mention the tiny little fact located on the wrapper? What happen to real sugar? Saw a throwback pepsi commercial, stated "made with REAL sugar" limited time only...wonder how much of a set back that's gonna cost them!? I saw that in the Mexican soda products only sugar is used.... Hmmmm? Way off topic, sorry! Anyone know of a "gu product" from sugar??? Do u think our organs are working while we are racing or riding or filling a gu flask? If not send me a message and buy my boxes of gu and e-gel!
References, citations, ???

You do know, don't you, that not all fructose is the same. High fructose corn syrup, for example, will affect you much differently than natural fructose derived from fruit. Also, fructose taken alone affects you differently than fructose taken in combination with other sugars.

If fructose is so evil, better stop with the apple a day thing.

its just my 2 cents! you are right they are not all the same...........................but they are all evil! thnx for your imput, now im gonna go eat an apple! thats been gassed and waxed and has a shelf life of 6 to 8 months! mercola.com
No, they are not all evil. Natural fructose in fruit form is just fine, thank you very much.
I eat a lot of junk- I'd be happy to take some energy off your hands.

pm me with what you have?

heck- last friday I spent $13 something at a dairy queen after drinking 8 or 9 oz of hammergel and consuming about 20 rolos.
