Horses on Squirrel Gap

So today I rode the loop from South Mills (north TH) to Buckhorn>Black mtn>Turkey Pen>South Mills(south end)>Mullinax>Squirrel>South Mills again back to 477(I rthink) off 1206.

Squirrel Gap was awesome w the new trail work. I liked it. Lots of work done. Good job. But, I saw where 2 horse went across Squirrel and left deep huff prints(4-6" deep were common on the newly packed ground) tracked up the entire first longish climb part of it. Are horse legal on it now? They looked fresh. Like earlier today. Green small horse trailer at Turkey Pen gap. fwiw.

Solrac the red, thanks for the shock pump and the 411 at Turkey Pen gap on that little trail that dropped down to the 66 jumps road descent down to South mills. It was a blast. Good talking to you and Old dude(I think thats his handle)

Turkey pen still goes on forever.

Trails are all in great shape.

Great day to be on a bike.

Carry on

Horses are not allowed between Horse Cove and Laurel Creek trails. They have always been allowed to use the respective end pieces of SG as connectors to the aforementioned trails.

I think from your description you are talking about the section of trail to Laurel Creek. If so, they were perfectly, albeit destructively, within their rights.
Ok. That sounds right. And fair enough then. I prolly didn't notice the tracks stopped after that trail.
Horses are still using Black Mountain Trail from Barnett Branch to Buckhorn Gap. Fresh crap on that stretch Saturday. They take an illegal route from S. Mills to Barnett Branch and then ride back Buckhorn to S. Mills and to the gauging station.

Who's got that Deer camera?
When Mark and I started, those two horses and their humans started before us. We didn't see any evidence of horse traffic on the non horse legal section, luckily.

It was a great day in the woods.

Good to put a face with a name you Quack addict.

there's an excellent thread in the trail builder forum on how to keep horses off the trails.

Sorry about the wrong handle. Was a long day in the saddle... lol I'll edit it.

Again, great seeing and talking to you guys too. That trail you pointed us too was a blast, and by far the best way down.
Touche', but I don't seem to get much done after 9PM.

With Nathan so excited, I'd hate to spoil that positive anticipation by actually delivering his frame. Shhh, don't tell.

Oh, heres some pics from the loop.

Finding and signing a Geocach near the top of Black.

Always a joy going up the back side of Clawhammer.

I heart Squirrel.

Obligatory pic off Black.

That is all

This is just a vent, really.
I stood aside on Sunday to let three men on horses pass in the opposite direction on S. Mills River trail. They had a hard time coaxing their horses past me. They were not especially pleasant to me even as I tried my best to be friendly and cooperative. The first of the three had a Coors Light in his hand.
Continuing along S. Mills I found several more Coors Light cans laying on the trail, as well as a variety of food trash.
If I had not been riding alone and in sort of a hurry, I would have chased those guys back down to "return" the cans to them. It made me so damn angry. The horse people can't even respect the Forest enough to keep hold of their empties, much less abide by the trail regulations. I am so sick of pretending to be nice to these people while they give me the stink-eye.

Real men don't litter.
Good to meet you Duckman. EmilyB, surprisingly there is often cellphone reception along S Mills River. It might be a good idea to have the FS Law Enforcement phone # on speed dial so you can arrange a little "reception" for littering fools. I recently read that a guy got a DUI riding a lawnmower on a road. Can you get a RUI for drinking on a horse?

Ran into two ladies on horses at Pressley Gap. Asked me if I knew the area - "Yes".
Lady spent about 5 minutes trying to find her position on the map. Informs me that they
just came up this trail here - pointing to Pressley Gap trail. I said "You mean the road here".
She says, "No, this trail here. I know it's closed to horses, but we just came up that way."

mmmm hmmm.

Damn lady, at least have the self-awareness to LIE to me !
Now now the horse people aren't the only ones leaving litter. There are *******s in every discipline and someone besides horse people throw gu containers and cliff bar wrappers off on trails too.
JEFF, dude... you were in my backyard and didn't call me? I'm heartbroken and may never recover. :cryin:

Been riding as much as this soggy past season has allowed. Yeah, hit me up next time you're gonna be over here. Likewise, me and a bud are wanting a tour of that stuff you discribed up behind FV. Will be seeing ya at the Gap soon too, you gonna be around for the Motard Rally?
