I don't think you should eliminate the concept but just be aware of the limitations with using gears and horizontal dropouts.

I have a Soma Juice and run it geared and find that removing the rear wheel can be a bit of chore. I also have XT discs and find I have to remove the caliper first to remove the wheel. A bit painful, esp. if you need to remove it on a regular basis...

not horz. but kinda.
been fixed,SS and geared I dont know how many times with great ease. its fun goin from all the gears and brakes to a fixie. as far as the drops stayin put i havent had issues. old pics ;)
