Hope hub 'binding'

I'm having a problem with my Hope Pro II binding / sticking / dragging when I tighten it up. It's a bolt on, trials/singlespeed hub. This happened shortly after I purchased the hub (about a year ago), and the shop told me that it was a tolerance issue with the freehub body. They replaced the freehub body, and after that the issue went away. The problem has now returned, making me think there is a bigger issue at play here.

It's hard to explain what the issue is, so I apologize in advance for any confusion. Basically, when the wheel is mounted, and the bolts are tightened, if I turn the cog with my hand it will bind in one place in the rotation (this is with the chain removed). The wheel seems to spin just fine, but if I spin it in the forward direction, the freehub body will bind in the same spot and begin to ratchet. It is almost as if the freehub body were making contact with the frame in one position, but I have verified that this is not the case.

Another odd thing is that if I tighten one bolt at a time, the axle will actually turn inside of the hub. I usually tighten both sides at the same time to prevent this from happening, but I'm not sure if this is related to the main issue or not.

I haven't found any similar issues to this in any of my searches. Has anyone seen something like this before?

Did you try emailing Hope Tech in the UK directly?

Their CS is usually very good. From you're description it sounds like a pawl, or something associated with a pawl is binding and not releasing but I may be way off.

Off the top of my head: Look at the black part #1 in the exploded drawing here:

If there is a small burr then it could cause binding when everything is tightened down.

Honestly though, best bet is to email Hope in the UK.

Dude not much to Hope hubs, binding issues are usually down to the spacer missing behind the freehub or incorrect tools where used when inserting bearings. Hope hubs are so easy to take apart and replace I would simply go grab there vid tutorial and tools and do it myself.

Regarding the axle turning when you tighten the bolts, This is never good, on any hub. Grease the threads on the bolts.

I'm going to repeat what you typed in my own words to see if I'm understanding you correctly.

-Put the wheel in the frame and tighten the bolts, without mounting the chain on the cassette.

-Spin the wheel forward.

-Without touching anything, the freehub begins to ratchet.

Sounds like something is bent or broken. Axle or something in the freehub. I would check the axle first, as that would explain the problem with the bolts binding and causing it to spin as well.

That's exactly what happens. I'll try greasing the threads a little bit to see if it helps any. I'm going to send an email to hope tech this weekend, too. I'll post an update when I hear back.

I'm not sure how much of a binding force you are encountering, but with my Pro II/SS hub out of the box there was a dust seal between the freehub and the hub shell that was rubbing because it had been seated a little crooked. It was very slight but put a drag on the whole freehub. I simply pulled apart the freehub (cleaned and regreased while I was in there) and reseated the dust seal, and it was golden after that. I'm not sure this sounds like the same problem, but could be something to check out.
