Did this route yesterday and there was still lots of snow. I don't think it will be prime for another month.

I hiked the Donner Tunnels with the wife today. As we were driving out I saw two guys pop out the HitG exit. Not saying there isn’t snow, but it’s getting ridden.

How were the bugs?

I didn't think the bugs were so bad, but I've always had good luck with mosquitoes while my companions complain.

This route generally retains snow longer than most so I wouldn't let it discourage you from other Sierra routes.

It's a different kind of fun now, if you enjoy plowing into a snow mound, hoping you get on top and do some gentle peddling to get to the other side.

Had some good recovery meals/beers there over the years.
