I really want a Niner FS bike but I am skittish about letting go of any cash in this economy; however, the deals now are fantastic. For example, I have seen Niner FS frames for around a grand. This may be done now? Not sure. Anyway, I just can't pull the trigger. Does anybody feel this way? I certainly don't want bike stuff on credit. Just wondering.

This economy would never have gotten here if everyone was spending the money they had and not borrowed money. There are no miracles... we cannot spend more than what we make - unless of course someone else is paying for our stuff.
Be smart - keep your money if not sure... Good deals were, are and will be again..... If economy continues to be weak- these manufacturers will have to realize that no one is spending $1749 for their frames. They will discount again. !!! After all they have it made in Taiwan or China probably for... what $200 ... just my guess !!
Thanks

I like not to being on either side of the pendulum swing. A year ago it was spend, spend, now it's put it under the mattress. If you have credit card debt I'd say no. If however your job is somewhat secure and you aren't up to your eyeballs in debt then new bikes are fun.

Hmmm

Good points. I don't have credit card debt and have a State job. I'm thinking but it might make sense to get the newer model because cheap ain't cheap unless you are happy with your bike....hmmm

While I agree with your outlook on responsibility with credit, I will say that as far as high end frame producers go; Niner has my full love and respect. Here is why: I called Niner a few weeks ago and settled on a new AIR9 (I have an 08 RIP9) but called asking about the 08 JET9's as well (me trying to be thrifty/feed my addiction somewhat responsibly). I have Decided to swap parts over from my Salsa El Mariachi and am building up a light AIR9 (XL Raw) (this is going to be my 4th Niner).

I love the JET9 but I couldn't find a deal on an '08 XL in Black; and I do have a deep love for the AIR9 (this will be my 2nd. The first I had to sell to help pay for a move out to CO. from GA.). I was also pretty bummed to realize that the '09 JET9 will be back up to $1,750 when they are stocked within the next few months... That said, Niner is still hundreds less than everyone else for a suspension system which I think honestly pedals as good if not better than the other mini-links out there. The CVA is the biggest sleeper of a design out there. Take a look the JET9 frame at $1750 (or the new RIP9 at $1799) then look at the Pivot 429 at $2200, Intense Spider at $2200 or the Turner Sultan at what, $2400?!!! That's $400-$600 more I can put into upgraded parts, sweet brakes, etc. The quality is all the same across the board IMHO if you put them side by side (unless you just want to buy a made in USA frame) and I think those guys are going to have a tough time selling a frame with less technology than the Niner's CVA suspension system - especially if you've seen the new RIP9 design with all those thick tubes and 1.5 head tube. I'm 6'5" and 215 - the new Niner stuff will be huge to guys like me on a budget and want a super solid frame. To me and where I'm at, Niner is a DEAL if you look at everyone else and their pricing in this market. Just my .02 cents

Peace,

Panfry:thumbsup:

The reality

Is the notion that you need to buy now and live life is probably what got America into her financial trouble. It is fairly immature and naive. However, if one can afford, buy it because you only live once or whatever other clique' you can find.

Of course it is.

But it is no less immature or naive than soliciting opinion as to whether one should spend one's money on a bicycle on an anonymous internet user forum.

 Now that's the sort of thinking that'll keep you happy and grow the economy :D

Now on the fork, where do you live and what sort or terrain/riding do you like? Is this a budget build or not? To me anywhere from 100-120mm is the sweet spot for the RIP9 depending on your terrain and riding style/preference. To me there's 2 options right now........1 - BUDGET Manitou Minute TA on sale @ jensonUSA (they only have the 100mm TA left) or 2 - '09 REBA 120mm with Maxle Lite.

After throwing rational thought out the window, I just bought a new RIP 9 frame. Now for the fork....and I can't decide!

The Reba is the one! Unless something comes up on ebay. I have until february(fingers crossed) to decide and buy.
