High School sucks

I am riding past Arrowhead High School ...

Them pencilneck morons. GA! it happened again! I am riding along the north entrance, and some mini-van mom decides to cut me off at the intersection. Right there, in front of me. I had to lean towards her turn so she wouldn't hit me. And I am on a fixie, where sudden stops are hard to come by. AH! And the kids in the right side of the van looking at me like I am some kind of moron riding a bike.

I hope she gets all 4 flats on the freeway, and has to stop on the left shoulder. Bicht!

The rest of my ride in was all thought...why didn't she see me? why didn't she wait like some people do? I had the right of way. Was she a typical non-caring white trash woman? ugh!

If I were a warlock, I'd cast a gnome spell on her. At night, all gnomes from nearby woods would film a lilliputian style porn with her...no, more like turn her into that one turd at the end of Weird Science. Or maybe, turn her into a hot rod steel 29er SS and I'd ride her all the time.

Happens here too.

Last season on the rural roads around Madison, we had a guy in a huge F350 pickup make a turn similar to that. He was coming towards us, turns left into his driveway really slowly in front of, not one rider (which might be easy to miss), but a group of about 15 riders. I think one of three things goes through their minds.

1: Legitimately didn't see you coming (the least likely)

2: Has no concept of how fast bikes are moving and honestly think they can get past in front of you with plenty of time (somewhat likely).

3: Don't care that you're coming. Bikes shouldn't be on the road anyway. Isn't that what we make sidewalks and crushed limestone rail trails for? If I hit him, maybe his bike will break and he'll have to drive like the rest of us normals. (most likely)

Schools are the worst. I think if you live less than a mile away your kid should be walking or riding, and if you live further than that your kid should have the option of taking the bus. If you want to drive your kid to school you should have to drop them a mile away.

I see a lot of single drivers in cars going to that school. We've all been there, it's a status symbol if you got to drive to school. If you rode the bus or rode your bike like I did when I was in high school, you were considered dork fodder.

eRNESTO?

Way back when I was in school the only thing worse for your status then riding your bike to school was having ma drop you off at the front door.
Let's face it if mom has to drive you to school how do you get loaded on dads booze at lunch?

BTW I saw something about a vigilante vet that was taking out cyclists across WI. She attempted to mow down the riders in her shuttle bus as retribution for what she calls 'goldfish slander'. She is also alarmed by the number of rabbits with 'condom' injuries and fear cyclists are involved.

Not a game i like to participate in. on a intersection free left turn i decided to take the lane so i wouldnt have to go through the turn with a car next to me. So this a$shole in a p/u pulls next to me on the left wanting to play the im bigger than you game and i dont budge from taking the lane. The a$shole therefore proceeds to go up on the median with a big bang and takes out a 4' cement filled steel pole. I didnt stop and he didnt stop but he almost took me out swearvingto the bike lane..

She cuts you off and then if someone comes within 50 feet of her kid on a bike she probably goes off like Mt St Helens. Unfortunately shes's setting a pattern of behavior that her kids will follow in adult life, i.e. "respect me but screw you".

People like this are why I quit riding on pavement, or at least limit my time on roads. I look like a friggin rabbit surrounded by wolfs when I'm on a street I'm looking around so much. Throw in the always present and in use cell phone and you take you life in your own hands riding or driving anymore. Anymore I hate to even drive anywhere. I'm gonna have to find a hospital to work at that I can ride singletrack to get to work.

I hate people anymore. Why can't people in America show some respect or courtesy? I sound like an old man already, but cars just BLAST through our neighborhood. I live in a tiny town and cant even drive to the grocery store without getting tailgated. On my bike, I often feel like the only guy in town who rides and cars give me an inch or so as they zoom by (if I'm lucky). I LOVE driving fast, and cornering hard, but I NEVER speed through neighborhoods or tailgate other drivers, no matter how slowly they are driving, and I always give pedestrians, bikers, etc. room and lift off the throttle as I go by them as a courtesy. People can be amazingly rude, and I cant figure out why.

I have the pleasure of riding past 5 schools just as they get out on my commute home. The parents routinely cut me off and park in the no-parking (and signed as such) bike lane...
On the flip side I was almost creamed by a construction truck on my way in this mornign that decided to take a right, right into me. Never knew I could powerslide a fully loaded commuter bike....

Do it Mexico style, but you probably get a citation here in the USA.

In San Carlos, ppl woud drive fast through the neighborhoods...my parents decided to make their own speedbumps. Broken chunks of concrete spewed across the street made drivers slowly navigate around the debris. We kids loved it!

Other families would just dig up trenches so cars would slow down.

But yes, it's the "you're on a bike" factor. I wish I carried a handful of rusty ball bearings to throw to ppl, but then that gets me to their level.

Again, anyone who cuts me off is probably driving on the interestate, 4 flats, left shoulder.

Fixie

I commute and get cut off a lot too, by all kinds of vehicles and drivers. But I've got V-Brakes and a freewheel. So most of the time it's not a problem. It's not right. It's irritating. But being able to stop on a dime is a pretty safe feature.

Regardless if I wan riding a freewheel, I would have turned with her to avoid being hit.

Some times I'm a hater too. I ride my bike to the grocery store...for groceries, and I get the occasional honk, "get off the road" comment, and the standard bad vibes from the non biking supersized SUV driving public. They hated me first, but I hated them back...It's all bad Karma.

Dont' worry GoFast. At least you're superior than they are. People who work to drive suck. People who ride to work, or to get groceries, are SUPERIOR

Scene: 8 hr red-eye bus trip from Morelia to Guadalajara.
Me: Seated on an ice-chest in the stairwell next to the driver (trying not to fall asleep and thus almost certainly out of the bus entirely).
The Driver: Deftly avoiding the speed bumps at each town along the highway by swerving into the oncoming lanes (the speed bumps were only set up to slow traffic entereing town, not leaving it).

I ride past an elementary school on my commute and it is always chaos when parents are picking their kids up. How people, parents, can drive so carelessly near a school where their own children are milling around. . .

Here's a link to an article about a hit and run killing of a cyclist that is causing mass protests here in Australia at the moment. Apparently it'll cost you only your liscence and a mere $3100 or $2500us to run down a cyclist and kill them here in Australia now. It won't be long till we see some clever tour company organizing big game hunts down under for ******** to come and bag themselves a cyclist. If this guy killed a child I wonder if the result would have been different.

Ernesto, you are superior to most people in many ways...not least of which is your mastery of gnomeology and dark side forces which is so hard to come by in this world of mini-van evil and SUV penis slapping. Thats why I decided to cancel my pre-order for a Hummer H3 and buy a cool retro Windsor, because 126mm rear dropout spacing in coming back man!!!! I find that lubing my chain with Cool Whip helps me navigate rich ***** Lake Country pre-pubecent public school traffic...well at least you didn't get nailed by a school buss. Can you eno an H3???

Thanks Cyclesmith. You better go to Gnome Fest. We'll loob some gnomes with cool whip for you and then we'll play "bobbing for naked gnomes" in a big canvas tent.

Um, H3 ENO? Yes, You can throw an ENO at an H# and get the tards inthat car to get all upset, because they suck.

I'm tired, my legs are fried, and I must go to bed.

We need big stickers with a witty text on it "I can't drive and almost killed a harmless cyclist". Msot importantly, it must be the kind of sticker that won't come off in one piece, the really yukkie kind that only get black from your fingers as you try to pull it off, but just keep falling apart. Revenge!!!

Anyone who cannot see a cyclist is not going to see a child.

The excuse "I didn't see him/her" should be taken as an immediate admission of negligence.

Loss of licence should be automatic.

Now you know why Gary Klein carries a Glock in a holster under his jersey on every ride (no joke). Well, maybe that's not why HE carries one, but if I could get a concealed-carry license in California...

I started cycling seriously while living in downtown Chicago, which has the benefit of making me very alert when I ride and have quick reactions. On the flip side, I also developed an extremely short fuse and no fear when it comes to confronting idiot drivers. Kryptonite locks may suck for securing your bike, but they make GREAT dents in the hoods of cabs and SUV's ;) .

Yeah...

...the Dodge preceding Durango (or Caravan) is apparently meant to be taken literally. I was playing hooky the other morning and went for a ride.

Heading home I had some HBFM, con HBFKs, riding me like I was the last glazed donut in the case. They were headed to a local elementary school. On the phone, drinking Starphuks, swatting at the HBFKs, tailgating me, etc.

Naturally, I found it logical to perform a 5th to 2nd downshift without tapping the throttle too much. Yet another reason to drive stick.

Let's just say her coffee wasn't so much in the cup anymore but rather coating the confines of her g-ride.

As for Chi-town. I lived there for 5 years. After one too many run ins with car doors and stupid people I just took the lane as traffic rarely exceeded 20mph most of the time. People would still honk and cuss at you even though you could have been going faster by lane splitting. People are stupid.

HAHAHAH! HBFM. People suck.

As a prerquisite for life, we should all take a course in Respect, Courtesy, and why cars suck.

I come in, and our token skinhead asked me: how much would I have to pay if I got a bike though you?
Um, sure, he can buy his own bike.
Anyway, he feels the pain when he pays for gas. He feels the pain of selling his MOnte Carlo. The pain for paying insurance for 3 NASCAR-esque cars. He sold one on ebay. Now it's his wife's car and their minivan...he think he can make it to work in 1.5 hrs from Oconomowoc. I make it between 1 hr or 45 min. depending on how I'm feeling.
He smokes too. Hopefully he will get it in his head to ride his bike, if he decides to.
