High, Low start settings for rear XTR

I tried to tweak my shifting since it has some hesitation between a few gears but lost track of the original settings and now I can not get the rears to shift properly. They will go up fine when its in the air and I'm adjusting but when I get to putting pedal strokes to it there is hesitating and sometimes a no shift. As it is I can either get them to go up easily or down easily but not smooth each direction. I should of just left it but I gotta learn sometime and now is the time. The rear is a shimano xtr and I was curious if there is a stock setting the high lows should be at from the start? It seems I can get the high on line but then the low won't line up properly etc. The high and low are fighting each other for control and I can't find a happy medium. I have been watching vids and everything and I am doing exactly what the vids are but I am SOL.

Have your hanger alignment checked.
How can I check this myself? I would much rather learn before I take it in to a shop if possible.
You will need one of these. They are not the cheapest tool, but is very valuable. If not, then you will need to take a trip to your LBS.

Thanks for the link, I will check my local shops to see if anyone has one at a reasonable price.
The high and low screws are limit screws and have nothing to do with shifting performance.
With your bike in a stand get behind the bike and eyeball the RD; does it look straight and parallel to wheel and cassette? If not your hanger is most likely bent. For adjustment go here. http://www.parktool.com/blog/repair-help/rear-derailler-adjustments-derailleur
Thanks for all the tips, the derilleur was bent out apparently. This was making it to I could set the limit to the inside cog and was having everything jumping around. I ended up bending it back using a 10mm bolt and wrench for leverage. I also used a 90 degree measure and everything seems good now. The high/low screws look normal now and one isn't backed all the way out while the other is almost all the way in. Some fine tuning is left but everything is shifting pretty smooth for now. Its been pooring out so I didn't get to really put it through the test.

Jeff, with the RD being bent the high and low is what was giving me the most issues due to the fact when the high was lined up the only way for me to get the gears to go all the way up was to turn the barrel out several times. Once in the Low position the only way to get the gears to drop was to turn the barrel all the way back in then i was back to step one. I actually used that link you gave me to get me through a few things.

We'll see what happens, thanks again

If you start having shifting problems all of a sudden a bent hanger is usually the cause. It's wise to always have an extra and keep it with you at all times.

And even new hangers need an alignment check.
