High Desert Trails: Conditions

I will be driving through to ABQ on the 21st and realized I can leave 3-4 hours earlier and take my first ride on the HDT. With the cold recently, wanted to ask if the trails are fine for riding, etc. I have the Gallup Waypoints guide and am wanting to start at the Dawn to Dusk TH and then toss in the 1st Mesa ride as well. I have read it will be a disaster if the trails are muddy so I wanted to aks ahead of time to make sure things are A-OK.

As of now the HDT is snow covered, probably won't be open until late March/early April. The system is very fragile during spring thaw. It's supposed to be snowy/wet here later part of February. You won't damage the trail if you ride when it's frozen, but it's not particularly fun when under snow, and when the sun hits in the morning there are always melty patches that have some sticky clay that most of us locals have no appetite for.

If it does become rideable I will post...
:( Bummer, I am anxious to check these trails out too!! Hopefully they do become ridable but I won;t be holding my breath. Thanks for the information.
Any update on the trail conditions? Weather.com is not painting me a rosie picture but locals know best. Is it ridable currently?

Not currently (19Feb11) but it won't be long if we get some rain out of this system to melt the snow. Maybe in two weeks.
Thanks for the update Bill, looking forward to riding the HDT again.
