That's funny. Many Bend natives can not afford a house in Bend.

But Bend is still a great place to live and ride though

As you should be!

Bend has great riding, skiing, kayaking/rafting and climbing (if you climb) all within a stone's throw of the place. Not to mention the ridiculous quantity of sunshine they get east of Cascades.....if I could earn a living wage down there, I'd absolutely consider moving there.

Enjoy....and put that big ring back on if you've got a bashguard on your bike(s)....the high speed stuff down there will warrant it.

Consider yourself lucky.... Lived in that area for 2 years and then came back to glorious Iowa. An awful lot of the natives did not seem to appreciate the beauty and variety Or. has to offer. Can't wait to get back to Bend to ride( oh and visit my mother).

Never ridden in C. Cali, so I can't compare.
But in my opinion, the riding in Oregon is superb.
Bend, as mentioned earlier, has it all... killer rockclimbing, paddling, and even summer snow less than 20 miles away on Bachelor.
As for riding, it is not hard to put 60 miles in one day out on those hills.
One one of my favourite rides is the loop around Bachelor, then hook up to the top of Mrazek for a great descent to Shevlin and then into Phil's.
Only thing is, in the summer the lower trails near town (el. ~3,400ft) get mighty dusty.
Regardless, Oregon can safely boast as having two of the premier river trails in the country in Umpqua and McKenzie. The Hood River area has great riding, not to mention world class windsurfing and kiteboarding, and if you like well made (and legal) freeride trails, Post Canyon is really nice. Soooo much out there it's crazy.

As far as the economy...
I've heard from locals and friends who'v lived there that Bend is growing extremely fast along with the cost of living, unfortunately, the job market is not quite up to par.

I was kinda bummed when North Face closed it's outlet a year or two ago but REI just opened up a brand new store there.

Unless you don't like cold weather. Bend is awesome but the housing has gotten very expensive but I hear the economy is taking off. Does anyone know why?
