So, we have a chance to add a mile to the top of Preston Trail. But here's the thing. We have to finish some badly needed maintenance on the rest of the trail first. Maintenance that will make Preston an even better trail.
But there is a problem. At the last trail work day only 4 mountain bikers showed up. In fact, there were at least twice as many people there riding their bikes and since the trails are closed this time of year were those people really just riding out to Poo Poo Point? Poaching illegal trails? Or what?
Now, I ask you, do you ride Tiger Mountain during the summer? Then how about helping out at one of the trail work days coming up? Check out the Evergreen calendar.

The next one is this Sunday and right now there is only 2 people signed up...

How many mountain bikers does it take to put in a trail?

2 to go to all the painful meetings for years.

4 to build the damn thing way too slowly.

A multitude to ask why it's not done yet and then complain after it's built.....

A majority of work parties are on Sundays or weekdays. Neither are available for me. An excuse? Maybe, but I do go to trail work parties when I have the free time and there's one going on.

Edit: Also, you might get more signups if you announce it more than 4 days in advance. Sure, it was probably on the trail work calendar but most people don't go look at that often.

Stick OR Carrot?

Please keep posting the WP's here in advance!
Personally I never check the evergreen site for WP's, as I've got my own building/maintenance to-do list.

I think the "problem" is that there are two types of riders:
  1. Ones who don't build
  2. And ones who are already busy building somewhere else ;)

I think a few from both groups can be recruited, but the guilting approach probably won't go far. Beer is a much more effective motivator! :D

Yes, carrots do work better, and there is one in my op. But if beer is what it takes, I'll bring what we called carrots back where I moved from.

Get It?

and of course most of you who read this already do a ton of trail work around here, and I thank you all for that.

Rocks and dirt were moved. The re routes up on the berm will make things much more fun by adding some gentle turns. The DNR is sinking lots of time into this so we can't let them down.

Thumbs down to the "I didn't see any sign" poachers. Acting stupid only make you look stupid. See you posers at the next work party!

I am not a poacher but do make the poopoo run on occasion in the winter. Why are the trails closed for such a long period of time? Is it the thought that more trail maintanence will be required due to the wet terrain or extra traffic?
Without going into a long diatribe about the effects of water and trail use I can say that yes, that's a pretty good generalization. And, because the DNR says so. :)

Poaching Tiger in the winter is just plain lame too. No reason for it. Lots of other low land places to ride.

Thanks for posting pics, Slop. I keep forgetting to bring my camera to take more pictures...

Not sure if it can be seen clearly, but there are LOTS of changes being made to the railroad grade section of Preston. DNR wants to make it a little more like actual singletrack and not so much like multi-lane freeway. So much so that a lot of the work is more like building new trail rather than simply maintaining the old crap.

We are about 3/5 of the way done on one traverse of the railroad grade switchbacks. With lots more sections to go, I don't know if all the work can get done before the normal April opening. If you want to see the changes being made before April but without being heckled by the trail gnomes and DNR, come and help out at one of the trail parties posted through the end of March. S/B plenty of notice for most folks!

BTW, spread the word - pretending to not know about the trail closure is not going to fly going forward. Any poachers coming down Preston when work parties are being held in the future will be told to turn back and go back down the gravel road instead of being allowed to continue down the trail.

At the bottom right of your keyboard, you will notice two buttons; one is a , and the other is a .

When you take a pause in your thoughts, type a comma (,)

When your thought is finished and you are ready to start a new one, type a period (.)

Sorry if I sound like a dick, but even on public forums it is hard to mask ones true nature.
