Cranks don't really care if it's 7/8/9 speed. As long as the chain doesn't fall between the rings, you should be fine.

For budget cranks - take a look here. Just replace the rings with something nicer later.

Or for something nicer, take a look for some Race Face Turbines on Ebay, or for even more money some new Middleburns.

Or you can take a look at updating the BB and cranks at the same time. You've got three options - keeping the sq taper, going spline (isis or octalink) or going with the integrated BB/crank combos.

Any crank is fine for 7, 8 or 9s use, but you'll need to try to find something of a similar era to your BB. The offset of the chainrings with respect to the hub or the crank needs to correspond with the spindle length to give you correct or at least decent chain-line.

Over the years the spindles have gotten shorter and the crank/chainring offsets changed accordingly.

Check the crank specs and buy one that specifies a spindle length of 110mm or close to that. Othewise buy the crank and BB together so they match.
