Buy the best bike you can afford now, upgrading gets very expensive real fast, so from what you've listed the Dawes haymaker 1500 is your best choice. Good Luck

You get the best deal on forks, wheels, brakes, and the other parts that make big improvements in the bikes, at a point you get better frames too, upgraditis is expensive, you'll get more enjoyment out of a better bike too. Good Luck however you go..

alright i have uped the budget to 500 over all. this would be new saddle? new tread? backpack? rear rack? so on, ha. would this be a good bike to build on, i am a diy guy but completely new to bikes other than oiling the chain, tubes, minor kids stuff. i am looking for a bike w lockouts on the front and disc brakes. honestly i am probably going to ride the tires untill i need new ones. although i rode my buddies and he had street tread and yeah its night and day difference. looking at bikes from bikes direct. i dont want a ss bike, ss is single speed right? i would like a 29er but with gears they are out of my range. seems like i am all over the place with this thread so i will let you guys take it from here. plan to purchase within the next week or so.

as from above here is what i have moved to.
