Hi all,

I had a $600 budget for a bike. I was going to get a GBEM for $499 and $100 extra for upgrades. I am also looking to use the bike to commute to work which is a 5 mile ride.

It happens that I found an used maxi cooker for $475 so I have $125 for upgrades now

The components are stock. What do you recommend?

I would not change much. Pedals would be one place to start. Save up for some studded tires for winter (keep eye on C'list during the summer). If the saddle hurts, change that.

Ok... But real feedback is ride it and see what you don't like. May not be a reason to upgrade anything, especially for a commuter.

That said, those tires won't be ideal for that.

Upgrade parts you don't like or wear out. Including contact points and fit adjustment.

You are the only one who can tell what parts you don't like improvement for.

Pedals for sure--thinner and bigger platforms such as race face chester or similar.

Do you have a good floor pump? You will want higher pressure for pavement--maybe about 20 pounds and lower pressure off road( 7-10) and it's nice to have a good pump to air up fast.

Tail lights are good for safety. headlight if you might be pushing darkness on your commute.

Check in to tubeless with those rims.

IF you don't need the traction of those Maxxis tires for what you do off road, then look into some smaller knob tires. Rear is the most important to roll well. I used to use a Larry and aired up it was amazingly fast on pavement but still did fine in dirt. (terrible in snow though).

Yeah. The tires are not working out. I heard about the origin8 supercell. The vee apache look nice but are over $100 a pop.
