Hard to say without seeing it but it sounds like a drivetrain replacement is necessary. Once the chainring is shot, the chain is most likely toast too. If that's toast, I'd replace the cassette as well. Not a cheap replacement. Replace those parts, "give it some beanz" and see what happens. Or, you can replace the bottom bracket (the internal bearings near the crankset) and see if that helps.

Shimano hollow tech 2 xt, on my frame sorry my punctuation is a bit shoddy
Well, the crosstrail has a standard BB threading and the suntour crank is most likely a standard mtn bike crankset so I'm assuming that it'll be an easy swap. Of course, you would need to replace the BB too.

Again, if the chainring is toast, the cassette and chain most likely are as well. Take it to shop and have them check your chain for wear. If it's stretched, time for a drivetrain replacement.

Agreed. As a general rule of thumb, replace the cassette and chainrings at the same time. You should get 2 chains for each cassette if you keep the chain clean and lubed. In other words, get a chain wear gauge, and replace the chain whenever it get to .75% wear. When the 2nd chain is worn, replace the cassette and the high-use chainring.
