This is a suspension question about a Santa Cruz Heckler...

I have a Push Industries 2005 Fox Vanilla RC that was DH valved for a Kona Stinky (2001). The shock has a 2" stroke and a 7.875 eye to eye with a 600lb spring.

I am asking this question since I don't know much about suspension.

The Heckler uses a 7.875 eye to eye shock, but uses both a 2" stroke and a 2.25" stroke. When I asked my shop about using the Push shock that I have they said something about the leverage ratio being off, I really don't know what that means.

Could you tell me if the Push shock that I have will work on the heckler (2006)? And if so what weight spring should I use, I weigh about 195lbs.

And if you have time could you compare the characteristics between using the Push shock on my heckler compared to the shock I am currently running, a Fox Float R with the lowest pro-pedal valving (7.875 X 2.25).

My use for the bike is mainly XC, but I also do ride slalom, DH and occasionally go dirt jumping.

My understanding is that with a 2 inch stroke, you'll lose some rear travel (vs a 2.25 stroke) that's all I can help you with.

There are 2 issues with using the Stinky shock on the Heckler. One is spring rate and the other is compression damping. Determining the spring rate is easy......

I don't know what the travel was on the 2001 Stinky (I think it's 6"), but if the travel was different, the following results will change. It's a simple formula, so you can just substitute the correct numbers.

Heckler Spring Rate = (HecklerTravel / Stinky Travel) * Stinky spring rate

If the Heckler travel is 5" with a 2" stroke shock, then:

In this example.... Heckler spring rate = 5/6 * 600 = 500 pound spring

The compression damping is another issue. If the shock was tuned for the Stinky, then it will have more compression damping than you need for the Heckler. You may not get full travel or the shock may be harsh on big hits. You may need to have the shock re-tuned for the Heckler leverage ratio:

Leverage ratio = rear wheel travel / shock stroke.

Heckler = 5/2 = 2.5:1 ratio (assuming that the Heckler travel is 5" with a 2" shock)
Stinky = 6/2 = 3:1 ratio (assuming that the Stinky was 6" travel)

I hope that helps.

That was helpful

The Stinky had 5" of travel with the 2" stroke. So if the Heckler has 5" of travel with the 2" stroke I am good there. That makes the spring rate the same.

As for the compression damping you mentioned, can I adjust that with the compression knob (vanilla RC), or is that an internal setting?

I e-mailed push about this but haven't heard back yet.

thanks
