I think those old XC bikes are more better with a rigid fork than a vintage 60mm pogo-noodle, especially for larger riders. Run a 2.35 tire at 30psi and it will damp just as well as one of those old forks anyway.
If you're under 240lbs and doing technical trails then you'll be happier in the end splurging on a tora 318 dialed down all the way, or better yet a fox F80. You can take the fork with you to the next bike, and crappy suspension sucks.
Those treks are pretty old... do you have a threaded headset? Do you have a 1" head tube? If yes... leave the old fork alone.
