Headshok Boot question

596 Views 6 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  damion
I cut the zip tie at the bottom of my fork boot in order to check the steerer underneath. In the process I knicked a little hole in the boot in the part that sits below the lip at what passes for the fork crown. Since the hole is below the part of the steerer itself that acts as the seal, as well as being underneath the ziptie, I am not freaking out and thinking I need a new boot right away. Soon, yes, but not right away. Right?

Second part. The fork is a Super Fatty Ultra DL. On a website called bikeparts.com I found two different versions of the boot. one for 50/60 series forks and another for 70/80 series. This is new nomenclature to me, and I don't know which fork I have.

Help.

The boots are $10.40 a piece on the site. They also have a pretty good selection of Cannondale fork maintenance tools for what its worth.

I know this stuff by heart. You are ok if the nick is below the zip tie. Go ahead and order one if you are not near a dealer. The super Fatty DL is an 80mm travel fork. There are older headshocks with 50/60mm travel, and the newer models have 70/80mm travel. Get it? You need the 70/80 boot.
Well, he's not really OK, he needs to get that done ASAP. Frankly, I would not ride it till it's fixed, or if you gotta ride (I understand) put some nice sticky tape over the hole, clean it well first to help it stick properly. If you mean okay, like he did not do any damage by doing what he did, then true, he's OK. But ride it that way, and the suction action of that boot will pull contaminates in very quickly, and turn a boot change, into an overhaul. Not disagreeing just adding info that may help in the long run=:)
Did I misread it?

Is the hole in a bad spot? I must have misread it. If is is in a position that will allow the suction to pull in contaminates, cover it with some goot duct tape or what not. This will give you a few rides while waiting on he boot.

Mendon, what are you doing up?

It is like 4am here, and I tonight I am playing insommniac. The kids get up in 3.5 hours. I am dead meat.
Let me describe better where the hole is.

The part of the boot below the lip on the fork crown that the bottom of the boot fits over. It is not in the ribbed or bellowed part of the boot. Is the prognosis still dire?

I'll do the tape thing if I can manage to cut the new zip tie without making a new hole. Stupid me.

As for the sizes, 70/80 and all that. I kind of figured that part out, but it is nice to be backed up by someone more knowledgeable.

Thanks for the help.

I thought you were in Co for some reason, but that is what happens when I get no sleep. (4 hours tops)

1 kid is gone off to school, and the 2 year old is sleeping still.

Catch you later.
