My friend has a Hayes ryde front brake disc brake and while the lever feels really solid it just doesn’t grab his brake well enough to stop it from rotating under any force but does slow it down.

We thought it was bleeding issue so he re-bled his brakes and I didn’t see any change. We also checked to make sure the rotor wasn’t contaminated and cleaned them as well as scuffed up the brake pads themselves. But there isn’t any change in braking performance.

So two questions:

Is this a brake bleeding issue? If so, does anyone have a good how to fit this particular brake? I tried searching and I couldn’t find anything and the way he did it didn’t look right either (he removed the cover, overfilled it and carefully pressed the lever).

If it’s not a bleeding issue what other things should we check for? I did check the rotor and it felt smooth with no grooves or lip to indicate it was worn.

Having the same issue with a SRAM brake setup. Make sure you don't have a frozen caliper piston. Pull the caliper / pads and cycle the pistons in and out (might have to hold back a dominant piston) If the pistons move freely I have replaced "cleaned" pads with new that restored braking power.
