I mail order from overseas a few times from places like Chain reaction and Pro bike kit and never got charged customs duty/tax before. But recently I purchased a frame from England and I was surprised that I received a bill from Fed Ex stating that I need to pay 30 bucks for customs duty. Is this typical?

Once I received a bill like that from Fed-Ex for foreign shipped product. I just ignored it and nothing ever happened. Fed-Ex still delivers packages to my house.

I got dinged 40 bucks when I ordered my On-One frame from jolly olde England.
Would have been nice to have gotten a heads up, but no huge deal.

I've ordered both small parts from CRC and a frame and other parts from On-One's England location. Nada for duty either time. I can't remember what shipper delivered the frame, though.

I am thinking there is a dollar value cut-off on customs fees and I think it is around $80, but it may be more.

Hope Brakes from Wiggle - I got dinged for $30
ebay Headset (China) - nada
Steel Fork (Australia) - nada

I ordered some special seals for work from Thailand - 36 x $0.79 = $28.44 + ~$12.50 shipping, but the declared value on the paperwork was type-o'd at 36 x $79 = $2844 --> $90 customs charge (ouch!) It still wasn't worth chasing it down.
