Has the Stans forumla changed?

2055 Views 15 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  shiggy
I read a post a couple of months back to the effect that Stans might have changed forumla by removing ammonia or something else from the mix.

I used to use Stans fluid and it was good. I changed back to tubes for a year for other reasons, then switched to Caffe Latex (which, frankly, sucked). I've been thinking of going back to Stans but a riding buddy managed pinch flat on the weekend, and the fluid just continued to spray and then bubble out a tiny hole without sealing. We spent 15 minutes watching him try fix it, then he just threw a tube in.

So my question is- does Stans work as well as it did a year ago, or has something changed in the formula to make it less effective?

A secondary question would be: Are there any other commercial sealants that work?

Edit: I should add that the only product that I can get locally with ease is Stans. Anything else involves complicated and expensive shipping.

Don't know about Stans formula but Slime has a new Pro Tubeless that is ammonia free.

I'm pretty sure it's not ammonia-free, but I do think it has less than Stan's.
I think it has.

Stan's seems to have less chunks, and seems to dry out faster.

I think they got scared by what it did to tires(cough-cough-Kenda) so they took out most of the ammonia which makes it dry out faster.

Not sure why it is so much runnier? I gave up on it and on CrappeExlax, and am now doing "homebrew".
Our formula hasn't changed for several years. Same ingredients, same ratios, etc for at least 5 years.

Pinch flats can be more difficult to seal if the threads of the casing are actually cut in any way. That said without seeing your friends tire I can't begin to speculate as to why it didn't seal. We'd love to have everything puncture taken care of but unfortunately that's just not possible right now.

Ammonia is a hazordous material that would have to be shown in the MSDS. The Slime Pro Tubeless MSDS does not report any...The Stans NoTubes MSDS does

Does it contain ammonia?

Yes it does contain trace amounts of ammonia. Slime Pro Tubeless Sealant contains much less ammonia than competing brands.
Perhaps because it's such a small amount, they are not required to list it on the MSDS???

Why does it seem less "chunky"?

I used to shake it up, then hold my finger over the end and invert it, and let it settle for 10 seconds before dumping it. It would barely come out of the bottle because of all the chunky stuff. I had to cut the tip very large for it to come out, and sometimes it would clog up.

Now it just dumps right out, and I don't feel any chunks as I release my finger off the end. Sure seems different to me.

That could very well be

I've heard this from several people I ride with in addition to on these forums. Instead of throwing out the remaining bottle, I wonder if mixing in some Slime For Tubeless (the stuff with black chunks of rubber in it) might help out a bit.
I tend to eat slime when I'm bored.

But seriously, which is better when using UST?

As mentioned in the other thread on this, UST does not need a latex based sealant so if your simply looking for flat preventative...go with Slime for Tubeless Tires (not the same as Slime Pro Tubeless...which is a sealant). It wont dry out and it is quite effective.
One aspect that must be considered...

is how long the stuff has been in the tire. If all the latex plates out inside the tire, then all you have left is the "milk". With no latex, it will run right out if you get a hole. It has happened to me. Now, I renew mine about every 3-4 months in the summer and maybe a month longer in the winter. When I renew it, I dump the contents and start with fresh Stans.

I think that Stans clumps up and has more noticable particles when it has been on the shelf longer. At least that is my theory. It could be that more are using it, and your source has a higher turn-over of inventory. However, if it is real old, then the "crystaline entity" forms in the bottom of the bottle and sucks all the latex out of solution, and the stuff is just no good. I never keep a bottle more than 1 yr.

What's best for tubeless ready like TNT?
My bud runs tubeless in his Epic; he runs it for commuting and trails, in BOTH wheelsets.

We did an experiment last year, and were surprised at the success of it.

He was running IRC Mythos, and had noticed that there was a white-dot pattern showing up on the sidewalls, and that it took a LOT of Stan's to keep them going. We surmised that the tire was sucking up the sealant.

We coated the inside of the tire with regular automotive Fix-A-Flat, let it dry, then re-installed the Stan's in the tire.

End of ALL issues. Tires stayed fully inflated when he took a 2-month 'sabbatical' from riding, one even stayed up all through the fall after he quit riding for the year.

Of the Slime products, use Slime Pro for tubeless ready tires
