So I'm trying to adjust the brake levers on my hardrock sport disc, and am failing for some reason. Maybe I'm stupid, but to bring the levers closer to the bars, I'm supposed to tighten the hex-headed screws on the opposite side of the levers, right? I tried this, and it doesn't seem to make any difference. My issue is that I'm having trouble reaching them for index finger braking, and would like to be able to easily get a hold on them.

Also, how long do the pads on BB5s typically last?

Is it the Avid FR? That's what came on mine, in '07, but I don't know what bike you have exactly. Looking at mine, that set screw is not very long and it's far from the pivot. So it probably doesn't make a huge difference. Did you try screwing yours in until they're flush with the body of the lever?

BB5 pad wear depends very much on conditions. Riding someplace dry, you might get multiple seasons out of them. But I've managed to wear through sets in just a few very muddy rides too.
