apparently this is a bigtime industry nowadays. sort of an old school protection protection raquet except with the internet. the russians and middle eastern types are all about it. basically hackers send you a message that you need to pay them a monthly fee for "security" or they will bring down your site. seems to be a good scam.

nope, its pretty popular, any major company that relies on its website for revenue (maybe even this one) you can think of has probably been threatened. The most popular target these days are online gambling sites as the targets of DNS (denial of service) attacks (ie: wire $X to this account or we will subject your site to a DNS attack and shut it down for hours) translates often to thousands or millions of dollars of lost revenue. DNS attacks are fairly easy to initiate (bot attacks involving some simple code that is easily downloadable.) Also, the gambling websites are popular targets because they are in murky waters in terms of us legality so are often reluctant to go to the authorities (CIA/ FBI in most cases)....scary stuff
