As some of you may have seen in MBA, Specialized has plans to "reissue" a replica of the original Stumpjumper later this year. The tires in the picture (thankfully) don't look like the original "Stumpjumper" tires, but rather the famous Ground Controls. The question in my mind is will Specialized re-release the Ground Control as well (please say yes, Specialized).

I'll like it if they come out with a re-issue of the original ground controls. Some years ago, I picked up a killer deal on the kevlar Ground Control/S in the gray compound from WTB, something like $10 per tire so I bought a whole scad of them. I've got one tire left that is unused and I was starting to look at a new tire. Maybe now I'll wait and see.

Keep us posted.

Heres a pic of the new Stumpy with the Ground Controls taken at the Sea Otter. They are alittle different than the originals but close enough. The Specialized Rep said they wanted to hear from customers if they should re-release the Ground Controls. So email Specialized your thoughts

 I really hope so! I'd rather them be exactly like the originals though.

That bike looks great....except for the cranks, which look very out of place IMO.

Yup, I was told the same thing. These are Ground Control S 1.95 with the original GC tread design. The sidewalls/casing looks a bit different, probably because of the factory used.

If we show the interest they will make them available.

Are you saying that its this tread design and not the slightly different one found on the old S model?

I recall it looking slightly different than an original GC, but pretty darn close.

Super extra bonus points if they release it in a Kevlar 2.1 with tan walls. :)

If they keep the price affordable, a lot of vintage mtb's would be running these I think.

Super extra happy fun bonus points if they release it in a Kevlar 2.1 with tan walls in both 26 and 29 inch sizes :eekster: but the 29" should probably be black wall.

There were a couple differences with the early /S that had small center knobs and later /S where the small center knobs were enhanced with small squares on the corners.
All of the Ss I've seen had the small squares on the corners, although they're a good chance I didn't see all the versions.

All of the non Ss I've seen had rectangular center blocks with a small square cut out of the center towards one side. Just visible in the pic above.

They did release a slightly different model of the non S called the Black Max. It had black sidewalls (imagine that). It also was labeled a 1.95 but had a larger casing than the original tan wall 1.95 (closer to a 2.1) and had slightly wider center knobs to fit the larger casing. I wouldn't mind at all if they rereleased this model.

The S and non S also varied in the side knobs. The S had 3 different shape/size side knobs, where the non S had 4. I prefer the non S side knobs.

Well....I'd rather see tan walls make a come back across the board. :D

Frishi ran tan walls at the 06 Sea Otter this year...looked dope.

skinwall tires are fresh. and with the advent of discs, the walls stay looking a lot cleaner a lot longer - no brake gunk messing 'em up. although all black rims and black tires looks pretty sweet, too.

aren't those tires on that scott the dugast 26in tubulars? those are even cooler.....

Hey 'Guin,

(Bare in mind that I am a Specialized nutter (look left)).

I was amazed when I saw a Fleabay ad for a freshly reproduced pair of Panaracer Timbuk II's posted by none other that Frist Flight Bicycles. Needless to say, I won the auction. First Flight had Panaracer do a run of the '88 or '89 Timbuk II's in Gumwall and are selling excess stock.

My best Bud in my teenage years used GC's exclusively and I used only Timbuk's (after a coupel of GC's) and I ALWAYS outclimbed him! He was a better racer and we had identical bikes. Contact First Flight!

I will check with the guys at the Big Red S on Monday re; the re-issue. I'm excited!

The bike is a reproduction so IMO, should be spec'd entirtely with new XT. It's the SRAM on the bike that doesn't sit well with me.

Yeah, but its got old school tires, seat, seatpost, brakes, handlebar/stem, fork, etc. So why not an old school crankset? ;) I don't care whether its XT, Suntour, Sugino or whatever as long as its all silver, 5 bolt 74/110, and square taper.

Its my understanding that all the parts on it are all new...or reproduction parts, and not NOS or reconditioned vintage bits.

(I sent Specy an email re: GC tires) Unless anyone has a better email contact?

The First Flight Bikes tires are pretty cool. Good size, and actually pretty darn light weight.
