...with my son.

Up from the Antelope side and he almost made it to the loop. Not bad for 6.

This one is coming down into the valley.

This one is coming down Antelope.

And post ride in the 'Lope lot...

It's cool to see a dad out riding with his son. Good quality time spent and fun for everyone.
Is that a Jamis Fester your son is riding? Jamis make some bangin little kids mountain bikes. My son is only two and I am already eyeing his first mountain bike :)
Hey, saw you guys coming up the road from the trailhead. Awesome to see your son hitting the trails. It was a great day to be out after all the rain lately!

Yip, it's an 03 Fester. We picked it up from Performance here in boulder for a song. Jamis really does have the kids bike thing down.

I just ordered a XS (12") Jamis Durango SX frame for my daughter who is 9. It has disc mounts and about the lowest standover/frame size I could find. I've got some Avid Mechs sitting in the closet and a rigid disc fork to stick on it... Should make for a great first mtnbike if I can keep the weight reasonable.

Yeah, traction was great.

I just took my wife up that side a couple of days ago and realized it wasn't just a road. It's actually a nice family ride and it allows me to ride a trail that I know and enjoy with them. I'll work them up to the rock garden side, but for now I'm pretty happy.

Next week my daughter will be on a geared bike too and we'll ALL be out there. :D

My wife has a Jamis Durango SX she has been riding for a few years now and she loves it!
I put an air fork and upgraded some components and it turned out to be a killer bike all for under $500. I think Jensonusa is blowing out the Durango frames for like $109 bucks.

That's where I got it. I couldn't find a better deal on a disc frame that small. I've got a pile of parts to get it started, but it won't be finished for another couple of weeks.

This is what I have so far...

King HS
Avid Mechs/SD 7 levers
XT Front/Rear der/cassette (9spd)
rigid disc fork (until I can figure out a cheap/functional air fork)
Easton EA50 post
Jamis riser bars from Jenson, QR clamp with the frame
Azonic Shorty stem (on loan from ETR)

I'd like to get it as light as I can without breaking the bank. :) I'll post up a pic when it's done.

Can't wait to get my five-year old on the trail

How young were your kids when they were able to shift gears?

Thanks for REALLY motivating me!

My son is 6 and this is his first geared bike, but he could have done it earlier if he had the bike.

No problem on the motivation. :D It was my pleasure...
