Going to be in Brevard in March

Hello all,

My wife's family has an old family homestead in the Crab Creek area of NC, literally just down the road from Dupont SF. We usually vacation there during her and the kids Spring Break in March and I will be bringing my bike with me this year. This will be my first time riding in the area and I'm curious what I should bring in my kit other than the usual, extra tube, multi-tool, tire tool, etc.

Also, we live in Florida and most of my riding is down here. I'm looking into getting some new tires and I know the riding needs are different from here and there, so any recommendations on what I should be looking for that I can use in both areas? I know I'll be compromising somewhere, but I don't have a lot of tire experience yet. Thanks!

Dupont is pretty XC and you can get away with just about anything there. Most trails are mostly clay-based, with some sand/decomposed granite. There are some rockier trails out there, too, but like I said, you can get away with just about anything there. Bent Creek is similar, but even less technical for the most part.

Pisgah proper is wetter and rockier and therefore having bigger tread and grippier rubber is beneficial there.

Harold: I'm headed to Pisgah in early April. I'm running Maxxis EXO sidewalls. 2.5 in front; 2.35 in rear. Around 20 LB of pressure. I ride some pretty rough stuff here in NE Georgia without any tire problems but it's much slower going. Should I have any concerns tire-wise for my trip to Pisgah?

EXO should be fine. Im running simular pressures with Cush Core 19/25. Are you running Cush Core?
Harold,

Thanks for the reply. I’m not planning on venturing into Pisgah until I have some experience riding up that way. I’m glad to hear that I can probably manage with what I have in DuPont.

I am not running any inserts.

Should be fine. Whether you need more will depend on how hard you tend to smash into things.

I ride a hardtail and use a Huck Norris insert in the rear tire only. I have Specialized Purgatory GRID 2.6 in the back, and a WTB Vigilante Light/High Grip 2.6 up front (it's pretty porky and tough for a "light" tire).

My wife rolls on a Maxxis DHF 2.35 up front and Ardent Race 2.35 in the back (EXO casings). She's a much more finesse-oriented rider than I am, and she prefers Dupont, Bent Creek, and intermediate Pisgah stuff (Lower Black, Cove Creek, Spencer/Fletcher, etc). I keep asking her if she's still okay with that Ardent Race in the back, and she doesn't have any trouble with it. shrug

Harold is spot on about Dupont and BC. If you plan on Pisgah or Kanuga you'll need a grippier tire and something with a solid sidewall. Cush Core is a plus but not a must.

I have Maxxis Assegei 2.6 front and DHR 2.4 rear and Cush Core in both with I9 Hydras and DT Swiss EX511 rims. The same set up on my Ebike except for Factor hubs instead of I9.
I am also planning a trip to Brevard in late march (this will be my first time in the area). I know that the weather can be hit or miss that time of year, so are there any areas that I should avoid in the spring?

Be prepared for any weather condition.... Pisgah will most likey be wet at the lower areas.
Hey guys,

So my BIL is not going to be able to ride with me. I’m wondering if most of the trails up in DuPont could be rode solo. I don’t ride with anyone here at home and I’m comfortable riding solo as long as I’m not likely to kill myself. My wife is more worried about cell service since we have not had very good service in DuPont in the past. We used to up there a lot before we had kids.

If I were to have her drop me off as close as I could get to Ridgline, how long does it normally take to get back to either the Lake Imaging parking area or the parking area at Hooker Falls. Was really wanting to do the Hickory Mountain Loop and Ridgeline at least.

Thanks!
you can solo most stuff in dupont easily enough. esp on the weekends, the place is busy enough that if you do get into trouble, it won't be long before help comes along.

From Guion, up Hickory, and down Ridgeline to Lake Imaging is probably in the 30-45min range for most folks. Especially if it's busy out there and you need to wait for folks sometimes. Or if you take a longer break at the top of Hickory Mtn. If that's all you're riding, maybe you won't stop for very long, or at all, at the top of Hickory Mtn.

I often get a weak signal at the Guion lot. You should have signal at the top of Hickory Mtn. Probably not at Lake Imaging or Hooker Falls lots since they're down low, however.
If you have a shuttle? Go past Guion p/l up to Rock Ridge.Go down RR. Take Rifle up to White Pine. Here you can decide to go straight to Hickory or take Hooker Creek.I’d go Hooker Creek up to Ridgeline. Right to Hickory. Ridgeline down to Lake Image to finish. Or you can go to Visiter center? Up Jim Branch to Isaac Heath to Locus to Hill Top. Turn right on Lake Image road to Buck Forest up to the covered bridge…
This would be a great loop! 15ish miles… BTW the cell service out there has been quite good lately…. Could be tree coverage is bare?
I’m glad to hear the cell service is better. It was quite awful the last time we went hiking, but that was a little over 8 years ago now.

You'll get a signal in places out there, but not everywhere.

It's better than most of Pisgah.
Went riding this morning! One OTB on Hickory Mountain Loop, but otherwise uneventful. I wish I could get up here more to ride. I had a blast, but it’s a whole different game then FL riding. Thanks for the help!
