Hey Guys. I love almost everything about my CrossCheck. The only thing I don't think I dig much anymore is the bar-end shifters (currently DT mounted). I rode a C'dale CAADx with rival at the shop and I fell in love with the SRAM DoubleTap.

Now I know the CrossCheck is a heavy beast, but I am curious as to what some of your CrossChecks are down to in weight with an upgraded drivetrain... Whether it's rival or not. Do you feel that your CX is more versatile with brifters? Quite a few of the guys I ride XC with enjoy taking their CX bikes on some of the milder trails in the area and I would like to give it a try, but not with the Bar-Cons installed.

Thanks for any input you may have! Pics are encouraged!

Here's sorta kinda what it looks like currently... (Ditched Brooks bar tape and installed road tires)

Don't let the shifters keep you off the singletrack. While they're not ideal, they still work - you just have to allow more time for shifting and be willing to stand and mash or sit and spin if you end up in the "wrong" gear for a particular spot. I tend to just leave it in a lowish gear when I'm on singletrack - it's not like I'd be fast anyway.

Gratuitous bike shot:

Of course, if what you really want is to upgrade to brifters, then go for it! I like the bar end shifters pretty well, but I'd upgrade if I had the cash flow to do it.

Oh, and...

Off topic question, but any particular reason for getting rid of the Brooks bar tape? I noticed it in the "Cross-Check Pics" thread and thought it looked sharp.

I have a full Ultegra group on my CC. My LBS said it was the lightest CC they ever built up.
Do you have a weight on it? Mine currently weighs 28.5.

I typically like a little more pad to my tape. I have actually double taped some of my bars in the past. I went with the Brooks purely for aesthetics, but it was not comfortable IMO, so it wasn't worth it. I would love to use the Brooks with some pads under it, but the tape is not long enough to accomodate that.

Well I decided that I would save my money for a while and picked up some Tiagra STI's from work to work with my XT Rear, rather than purge on the Rival group right now. Should have them installed soon.

I actually like the bar-cons more when mountainbiking my C-C than riding on the road.
I'm on the hoods 95% of the time on the smooth stuff but once it gets rough or I am riding fast enough to need strong braking (i.e. singletrack) I'm down on the drops all the time. From the drop I find it very natural to slide my hand back slightly to shift while still gripping the bar. The short lower sections of my Midge bars probably helps here.

I have no idea how much mine weighs and don't really care. It has 36 spoke 29er wheels that have stayed true after many beatings and staircase adventures.

I am thinking about buying a Cross Check and 28 lbs seems heavy, am I wrong? my Aluminum mt bike with a coil and some mavic 321's only weighs 33. I am really leaning towards a Cross Check and I was wondering if I bought the complete bike package that Surly offers will it be under 28?

Thanks
Keith
