My wife has broke down and agreed to go to whislter this year. I think it has something to do with her seeing whistler on "the L word". Either way I dont care why, I just know Im goin!!! whats the best time to go and are there any secret low cost spots to stay? the less it costs me the longer i get to stay!! I dont want to go when there are tons of people (crankworks etc..) any help would be appreciated.

A bed and breakfast in Squamish, North Van, or Pemberton maybe. Unless you have some sort of corperate discount you're bringing a small suitcase of money to Whistler.

If you're into it then it's worth it, but it's not a camping in the parking lot kind of place anymore.

food and accommodation costs are on par with other in-season rates at places like Tahoe, in other words, it ain't cheap to stay in Whistler. It is a lot cheaper to stay in Squamish but Whistler is a 45 minute drive from Squamish most days (unless traffic is heavy or the highway construction is slowing things down, or there's a road closing traffic accident). On those days there's lots of riding in Squamish.

To the OP, do a search, there's been countless posts on Whistler. As you said, avoid crankworx if you want to avoid the crowds. I wouldn't go any earlier than mid-June so you are certain to ride Garbonzo. We're having a stellar snow season, so I'd bet things won't be open up top until early June.
