How can this be done lately with the long availability wait times? Surely other than used or a box store find, I would not expect one under the tree, as it were.

I would be all in for a gift card and order what I wanted-and wait.

Depends what you're looking for and how far you're willing to travel. We got our son a Commencal and planned it back in October, and they shipped it just this past Friday so we'll have it under the tree. If it's for a kid I wouldn't wanna put an IOU in a card, but an adult I wouldn't hesitate to do so. A lotta bikes like Santa Cruz aren't shipping til Fall 2022 so it just comes down to what you're looking for. I wouldn't get a bike I don't really want though just so I can have it by Christmas. I'd rather wait to get what I really want, but that's just me.

For kids it's one thing. Though I always hated when parents would ask me which size to buy for their kid who is however many years old, but without the kid present.

For an adult? Nope. Not even before the pandemic did I think that was a good idea. Just because people's tastes and fitment can be so different, the RECIPIENT is the one who needs to go through the purchase and fitting process.

I've always liked the idea to purchase a little miniature bike and wrap that as the IOU. It'd be in a box, so the recipient won't automatically think gift card, and they might briefly think that the miniature itself is the gift, so you should be able to get a fun response if you play it right.

The only time I think actually buying the bike for the adult without their participation can work is when you're after something where fit is a very low concern. Stuff like cruiser bikes where they don't generally come in more than 1 or 2 sizes. Sold one to Chuck Pagano (NFL football coach at the time) once for his wife as a mother's day present, and he INSISTED on me suggesting which color he should buy. I never met the guy's wife - I had NO idea what her aesthetic preferences might be. I ended up "punting" (har har) and telling him what my own wife would have preferred and that's the one he bought. lol. Turns out his wife ended up liking it, so either I got lucky or she's not very picky and probably would have liked most anything.

If the recipeint still believes in Santa, you're going to have to go with new. If not, I'd look on pinkbike. I scored a almost new Guerrilla Gravity Smash with I9/Nox wheels, Hope Tech 3 E4s, Envy stuff, Bike Yoke dropper and everything else top shelf for $2300 right before the cough.

Yes, this can be done if you have a relationship with a good/great local bike shop. I just went through this with two new wheelsets. Couldn't find anything online, couldn't find anything at other LBS, however, this one shop who tries just a little harder than others came through with a great option, great price, and availability.

I am in favor of quality KID bikes under the tree
which are not made by other Kids
important to me and I hope to other kid bike designers / importers
Most high end bikes are being made in Taiwan which unlike China and Vietnam does not use child labor or slave labor in its factories. It is with bike clothing that one is buying products made by slave labor regardless of the brand.

Bike shops have more in stock than one might realize if going by online information. I have been 100% successful when I have taken the time to phone shop after shop until I found something I wanted, either my first or my second choice in terms of brand and model but in my size.
