What is the seat post size for the Giant XTC (I'm not sure what year). The post in the bike is a 27.2, but the shim shows a 27.2 to 31.7, which I've never heard of. It's also a sloppy fit, so I'm guessing it's mis-labeled and mis-sized.

I tried doing a search, but I repeatedly came up with a fatal error message - the reliability of this site is going downhill rapidly - oops...slowly - this site doesn't do anything quickly. It's ever so painfully slow on both my home computer and my work computer.

my 2004 XTC alu had the same shim and stock seatpost.

Seeing as it is near impossible to find a 31.7 you have two options:) You can get a 31.6 and tighten the bolt slightly more, or do what i did, and get a 31.8 thompson, jam it in there and not worry about it slipping, it is a tight fit, tight enough, that when the bolt is loose, the post will not move unless it has 'extra' weight on it. Good fit if your not wanting to continously adjust your seatpost height, IMO.

Giant are typically 30.9mm of the last few years (anyways).

My 04VT is 30.9mm (it came with the sad silly 27.2 shim but got the correct post) and the 06 Aussie XTC is 30.9mm (or 30.8 works just as good).

What year do you have?
It's actually a friend's bike I'm trying to diagnose a creeking problem. The bike is relatively new, so I'm guessing it's about a 2003-04. I suspect the shim is mismarked and missized - especially if it's supposed to be about a 30.9. The fit with the current components is sloppy loose.

Bike Freak, is it really a 31.7 post???

With the shim, it's a 27.2
My real question is what is the seat tube size? It seems from what was said and what is on the newest XTCs that it's 30.9. I think the stock shim was not only mislabeled at 31.7, but also missized - it feels like it's a tad too small.

Well I'm 100% certain that my 2004 Alu XTC had a 31.7 shim, it used to creak all the time unless it had heaps of grase, so i put in a 31.8 thompson and all was sweet.

I belive the Composite frames and possibly (??), the 2005/06 frames are different?

I know the VT frames have the 30.9, which is certainly the wrong fit for my XTC.
