I dusted off my son's old Mongoose (damn thing's heavy) cause my daughter wants to start riding. Having major difficulty with gearing. I can set the rear to hit only six cogs, but not smoothly from high to low and vice versa. No matter what I try I either miss the lower or upper cog. I can't get the front to shift to the big chainring, and if I'm not mistaken a proper adjustment starts with big ring and smallest cog.

I've tighten up all the cable tensioners. Should I loosen them slightly to allow for adjusting either way? Trying to avoid spending $ only cause I'm not sure she'll stick with it.

What's the next couple of steps?

Thanks. I was able to get through all the gears. Not perfectly clean, but it's good enough considering it's a garage sale purchase with old SRAM shifters and Shimano deraileurs. I'm not even going to worry about the Front simply because I don't see her needing the big ring. I almost never use mine.
