38x16 in the snow? Dude, yer sick.

As for me, don't have snow. Have mud. Plus serious climbing. Running 36x24 (29er). Love this ratio.

South Bay Area SS'ing

Hey just a quick question. If you were to say try to ride your SS bike of that god forsaken trail known as Kennedy- what gear ratio would you choose. I run 33/19 and have a hell of a time staying on my bike. Have to walk half the damm thing. It is a 26 bike. I know the math and all the blah blah blah but honestly, am I just a *****? If you were a knewer rider and just paid $80 for an eno 19 tooth freewheel because you thought it would make it much better- would you go 20 or 21? Or would you make the ring up front smaller because it probably cheaper anyway? Just curious what experienced ss'ers do. Oh by the way- does anybody else love how quiet the bikes are as you hall ass down a trail?

let me start by saying,I am not a bike nut that knows everything about bikes.

but i believe that to lower the ratio on a SS mountain bike, puting a smaller front chain wheel on it is a excelent way to go.

It is cheaper and it being smaller helps your ground clearance ,thats good on a off road bike. and there easy to change.

I myself am going to a higher ratio,by puting a larger front chain wheel on it.

Not to hyjack your thread here,But i am wondering how much of a change going from 38 to 44 is going to be.

at first i was thinking 40 tooth but that is so close to 38 i figured i should make a bigger jump.
as it is now the 38 launches like a rocket
