Im looking into a buying a bike soon and cant decided between these twos. I figured i would buy the the regular sport or Tassajara and build off it. Instead of paying $800 for a bike that already has disc. Anyways i would like to get some feedback on these bikes. And would like to know which ones you guys think is better. My budget is $800. But i rather pay less and upgrade some of the parts then to buy a bike that already has disc. Anyways if i can get some feedback that would be nice.

Ok, what kind of riding are you going to be doing?
The Hardrock is more of urban assaultish, heavy bike and is not suited for XC. Do not buy if you plan on upgrading in order to lose weight, since it is very heavy.

The Hardrock sport is a pretty low end bike, and I would compare the components to a Trek 820.

There are better options if you consider buying online, if not, go with the Tassajara.

My personal preference between the two is the GF Tassajara. I've ridden Fishers before and theare feel nice. I'm not too keen on the lower end Specialized however, even though I own a SJ FSR. I think GF (trek) makes excellent hard tails. But isn't the Tassajara $730 and the hard rock only $390?

You can buy online and get a no name bike with nice components yes that's true, but you can also go to your LBS and find a Brand name bike on sale for basically the same price especially if you look for close out 06's this time of year.

What? I don't even own an ibex. Im ASIAN. What is wrong for wanting the most for your buck?

Im talking about iron horse, ibex, motobecane, etc. Even ebay's Schwinn,Mongoose etc. How about GT?

Where I live, 06 model closeouts are non-existent.
The Gary fisher Tass Disc 06 model would be 850 with tax.
Online you find similar specs for $600-700.

I have the Tassajara for cross country use. It is a little trooper and rides like a dream for a hardtail. I upgraded to a fs but am holding onto this bike because it is light weight and climbs fast. If I am going to be on a smooth trail and doing a lot of climbing, I will use this bike.

Hey I have a 05 Tass, I love it, I bought it for 800 from my LBS, I mean i did bunch of upgrades throughout the 2 years I have had it....but thats why i bought it, i didnt have the cash to buy anything at the higher levels, this way i was able to upgrade and feel the diffrence between the new stuff...because it came with HYDro discs' I felt I couldn't pass it up for the price. I think out of the box, its a great ride, and you'll love the genesis geometry. Here are the upgrades over the 2 years in order of what ithought I needed/wanted...
1) Can creek Terros Disc --I weigh 235, and am 5'10 so i needed stronger wheels.
2) lock grips,
3) thompson seat post
4) Sram x9 group
5) XT crank
6) Marz MX fork
