I have more than 1 bikes, and I'm thinking to do some national park "bike-packing" with my mountain bike. I would also do some inter-state bike touring trips. In these activities, full GPS capability is important.

On regular weekends, I use my road bike to bike around the city. And I'd probably just need a trainer, performance and trail recorder at those times.

What should I get?
Garmin Edge 705? Or Separate the function / investment: Vista HCX + Edge 305. One plus side of Vista HCX is that is has 25 hours of battery life; it also functions like the Edge 705 without the trainer functions.

If you're interested in bikepacking, I think the Vista HCX is a clear winner over the 705, unless you can deal with a way to recharge it's built in battery on the trail. It's easy to carry a spare set of AA's, and they really do last a long time.

To me, it sounds like you'd be better off with getting two gps's :)
