Does anyone use a Garmin 301 or any of the other GPS unit's for "training'" or otherwise just for logging rides?
I saw them on sale at REI early this season and grabbed one. It's maybe the best $150 I ever spent.
Anyway, it's great but there is one thing about it I'm kinda frustrated by: When climbing something really steep, I'm riding pretty slow. Apparently this pace drops the GPS unit below the threshold where it thinks I'm resting, and it stops logging ride time and starts logging resting time. I haven't been able to adjust this threshold.
Here's what this does:
It reduces my riding time so it looks like I rode faster and increases my "resting" time.
As I get in better shape and ride faster, (above the "resting" threshold) my riding time increases and it looks like it took me longer to get to some benchmark.
Mt Falcon is a good example:
Let's say it takes me 35 minutes to get to the Gazebo at the top of Mt Falcon from the lot, but I was riding so slowly for a total of 5 minutes that dropped below the threshold and decided I must be "resting". When I get to the top, it says it took me 30 minutes and I rested for 5. My watch tells me it took 35, and I definately feel like I wasn't resting!
The next time I ride it faster and only drop below the threshold for 2 minutes. So this time it took me 33 minutes (or something like that) but when I get to the top it tells me it took me 31 minutes and I rested for 2.
Get it?
So, does anyone else have one of these things, and have they seen this same thing?
When I drill down into the menus I don't see anything that allows me to adjust the "rest" mode threshold. It does this even if I set it in "hiking" mode.
