Do I buy a set of FSA XC 300 wheels for $400 or Dave's King hubs, Stans rims for $750. I know what the better set is but $750 is alot of money. Could I justify the Dave's with the idea that they are a wise future investment that would last much longer than the FSAs?

Yes x 100! Let go of the extra cash and you will have a great set of wheels that will be a performance improvement. I had a set of xc 300's converted to tubeless and they were average, not bad . I upgraded to a handbuilt set and converted them tubeless and they made my bike seem lighter and more responsive, they roll a lot better too. I have given them a good hammering and they are still true. No flex either. I paid $550 for mine, hope pro2/Dt 4.1d, sapim spokes. well pleased and well worth the $$$

If I go Dave's handbuilt and want to save a few pennies from the King's, what are the next best hubs. I want strong and long lasting.

"Investment?"

Good hubs can last for many, many years of use. Rims and spokes are consumable parts.
I don't mean investment as in future earnings but future money saved by spending more now. Buy the better Dave's King/Stans wheels now and avoid buying a less expensive wheel twice later on. Also I would like to spend less time repairing parts such as my present XT hub. While I have your ear, what alternative to King hubs would you recommend? I will go with King if they are really worth the investment.

but don't the rims make up a big chunk of the cost? look at shimano's xtr wheelset. this damn set is what, $800? if you were to break it down, wouldn't the rims factor as much, if not more into the cost of the set as the hubs? that's a HELL of a lot of money for a consumable part
