Does anyone know of a full fender that will cover a real 29"er tire - the Nano to be specific? The search function comes up with a few solutions, but no real full fenders.

Thanks - thinking of turning the KM into a moustache-bared commuter/rambling bike.

no idea but i snapped my fender like a twig off road in about 500 feet. the first stick that i kicked up promptly destroyed the fender.

since then i have come to think off-road is not the place for full fenders (hell i destroy them commuting on a semi-regular basis). all full fenders i've tried and broken so far (sks, zefal & planet bike) seem pretty damn fragile.

that said i think planet bike fat freddy fenders will work (THEY ARE FREAKIN HUGE).

Here are some pics of mine. As max-a-mill has said they are somewhat fragile and infact I broke my rear fender last week. As long as you stay on pavement you should be fine but full fenders won't last very long off-road. These in the pics are 60mm wide Zefal and cover tires up to 2.35" wide.

I'd get one of those seatpost mounted rear splash fender things...that way no possible interaction with the tire, still keeps you covered...

Looks great. That is pretty close to what I am trying to build - just with bigger tires. The bike will see mostly pavement with the occasional gravel road or dirt cut-thru.

Are those the Zefal fenders for 26" wheels or 700c? Also are you using the stock hardware?

I have some of the Planet Bike Freddy fenders that are the biggest size available for 26" wheels (I think 60mm), but I can not get them to fit over the tires - maybe longer mounting stays..

You can extend the struts with rack straps

So, like, where did you get them?

Yes, those are Zefal fenders for a 26" Mt. Bike. I bought them from http://www.nashbar.com a few years ago. Now Nashbar carries the SKS brand that says it fits 26"-28" wheels and is 60mm wide. The SKS looks like the Planet Bike fenders. I've got a set of 2.35 Schwalbe Big Apple tires on order and will have to revamp my fenders a bit to clear those behemoths.

Great! Keep us updated on the Big Apple fender project.

The monkey looks nice BTW

I've been using the cheaper version of the Planet Bike fenders for over 2 years with no problem.

What are you doing to destroy these fenders? I've sold dozens sets of the Planet Bike hardcore fenders over the last few years with zero problems. Is there a weak point I'm unaware of?

I'm sure you can get the largest 26 PB fenders to work with a bit of ingenuity.

They work, at least on the front. below is a wide 26" fender over a 29" Mythos. I cut it behind the fork crown for better clearance (26" fork & frame). Used the rack struts as mentioned above.

No toe overlap despite the extra tire clearance, 185 mm cranks and a size 46 shoe.

Thanks for the pics Shig. I am going to play around some more with the Planet Bike Freddy fenders this week and see if I can get them to work. I have some 2.0 BAs so I will start with those. I'll try to dig up some rack staps as well.

BTW - Is that your standard STI/lever position for non-WTB drops? I have the Bell Laps on my cross bike and my bars are angled down more and the levers are mounted higher. How is the comfort on the hoods? Been riding the cross bike alot lately, I guess that's why it is on my mind.

Thanks,

LP

The Bell Laps stayed on for two rides. I absolutely, totally, positively hate "anatomical bend" drop bars (and not just the Bell Laps). They reduce the useable hand positions, make the reach to the brake levers longer and make my hands go numb. A lose-lose design in my book. The new WTB dirt dropbar will never see one of my bikes because they have gone "anatomical" and have a 31.8 clamp area.

I have to use round bend dropbars. Even with road dropbars I run my levers low for a better reach from the drops. Hood comfort is fine for me.

BTW my spell-check suggests I replace your name with "panpipe". :)

run over stick, stick gets kicked up and wedged betwen the tire and the fender, before you can stop, KABLEWEY plastic is broken and fender is ruined....

i just picked up two pair of sks fenders that have a release of sorts that lets the fender come off the fork mounts in the front to avoid this type of snappage, and it works. unfortunately it is front only and i broke the back one (actually me and my girlfirend have both broken a back one already). the front one on the GF's bike did survive a stick thanks to the releases though!

but hey fenders are cheap and commuting in the rain sucks without them, i have come to think of them as semi-disposable. if i can get a picture i'll show you the franken-fenders our bikes have now. my cobbled together rear fender (made from a broken one with a watterbottle mudflap extension in the back) makes my bike look like a car in a mad-max movie.

i might try some metal fenders soon if i can find a cheap set.

SKS Chromoplastic in the largest size comes with extended length stays.

You can also throw away the black plastic front stay mounts in favor of more durable recycled brake washers (smaller concave washer, alloy, screw head goes into dished side).

The SKS fender stays are so strong that you'll need large bolt cutters to size them after installation. They're also very light weight.

Double check! See how much space you have between your foot and the front wheel. Decide if you can lose 3/4 inch.

The SKS (maybe p65?) stay brackets can be "stretched" out to cover even larger tires, such as the Schwalbe Big Apple.

Chrome looking alloy and black colors, all encased in a plastic that won't dent.

Have fun!
