Okay so my missus bought me a T.H.E carbon full face for crimbo in XL, and it didn't fit.

I have exactly a 62cm head so i thought the THE would be okay!

Can anyone suggest any good carbon lids for the guy with a larger noggin, i'd rather not venture into MX helmets due to venting and weight but i may have to.

Can anyone tell me how big Troy Lee's come up? would an XL fit?

I've also looked at the Giro Remedy as it seems their large fits up to 63cm yet i'd rather get a Troy Lee if I can...............

Pads shrink (10-15%) after few days of wearing/washing. My Large Giro Remedy was tight initially, and now a little loose. My XL Troy Lee D2 was really tight (a little smaller than Giro), and now just right. If yours is tight but fits, it will get better as you wear/wash it more. Try getting a haircut also. :)

The D2/D3's are a really tight fit and that's kind of the way it should be. TLD says 'As tight as you can bare'.

With the D3's at least I know that an"XL" is just a L with slightly looser pads.

My D3 feels like a Deviant in terms of ventilation and weight but offers about 3x more protection.

i think half the problem is my head shape, it seems to be long rather than round meaning only certain brands fit.

the THE helmet was very round so squeezed my forehead and rear of my head.

I'll try the Remedy, if not ill be looking at MX options.

Me too... Remedy is for round heads, didn't fit me well. TLDs fit me just about perfect.

Nice bikes, I have an '09 Remedy 9 and an '09 Session 88 DH, My Remedy started life as an '08 R7, I got the '09 R9 frame as a crash replacement. I broke my arm in the crash along with the frame.

The D2's eps shell is pretty thin. I did a lot of research, and came across a lot of anecdotal evidence of concussions with people wearing D2s.
Your going to sacrifice some protection by not using a moto helmet. The one you posted is a moto helmet and can not be compared to a D2 or even a D3.

Anecdotal evidence is a poor way to make a decision. What kind of sources did you find during your reasearch that lead you to belive that the D2 was inferior compared to other DH MTB intended helmets?

Thats why I said it was anecdotal. I found this information here and on ridemonkey. I think it was SMT who mentioned that his riding group switched to moto helmets after a few concussions and haven't had that issue since they switched. I found similar stories on RM. Most serious dh'ers around here use mx helmets too.

You can definitely compare a moto to a mtb helmet. They both have a fiberglass/composite shell and an EPS liner. The moto helmet has a thicker EPS liner and is built to different standards. Both serve teh same function.

If you wear a moto helmet you can just drill holes in your head to save weight.
haha. The moto helmet does offer more protection. I guess its just preference between whether you want a helmet that breathes and doesn't weigh a ton or a helmet with a DOT rating.

I tell you if the extra 1/4" of eps on my D3 saves me from the concussion. My goal is not to destroy it for a little while though.

Damn. Very good info bound to be on this thread. Thanks. I've got a 62cm head that is.. yeah you guessed it, not round but longish. And finding a helmet that fits is always a pain.

Have you by any chance ever tried 661 EVO? Not suggesting it, just interested in it myself cause it's cheap but a bit reluctant on ordering it since the largest size is 60-62cm.. and I've got bad vibes about that.

I have the 661 evo, it fits but chin cguard actually touches my chin meaning if you stack it hurts your face almost defeating the object of having a full face.........

The 661 fits the top of my fat head yet doesn't have enough room for the rest of my face chin etc!!!

I'm making myself sound like a right weird looking goliath here aren't i lol!

After having two serious head inj myself and big noggin (23 1/4), I had to look at jumping up to a moto helmet. The crash ratings are higher and I need to have the best I can get.
Now we all should now that no matter what helmet, head injuries still happen. The brain will still bounce around in the cranial space regardless of the helmet. For those that don't understand TBI's, its the brain contacting the inside of the skull that cause the injury.
The hope is that the some of the force is absorbed in the helmet. I guess that's where the differences lay between, DOT, SNELL, etc ratings are applied.
I was very concerned about weight increases also, but found the Bell Moto8 is just about the same weight as the TLD carbon helmets. So I grabbed an 09 MOTO8 on clearance for $150.
The fit is tight but as forementioned, they do loosen up.
