Hi,
I noticed that when I hold the front brake lever and push the bike fordward, then backward the wheel rotates like 5-7mm. The centerlock lockring isn't loose, spokes are tight and I didn't see the tire move either. There is not sideway play.
Hub failure or does it need to be adjusted?
It's a Shimano XT M778 hub.

Yes. If nothing else, may be it's the brake pads.. But they shouldn't be loose.

No. I haven't touched it since the wheel was laced by a bike shop. Maybe it's time for service. I'll take it somewhere and ask them to adjust it. (and inspect)

Yes the loose ball bearings inside Shimano hub make it tricky to preload / very fine line between too tight too loose. In your case i suspect too loose.

There's no sideways play so it's not the hub bearings. The problem is tolerances in the centerlock spline interface; sometimes the splines on a particular rotor and/or hub are a bit of a loose fit and you get forward and back play in the wheel with the brakes on. It's pretty much normal on all the lower end rotors which use the stamped steel splines, but sometimes it can happen with the higher end rotors as well. It's a bit annoying but nothing to worry about.
