Friend has $1000 to spend... what to get?

I have a friend who is looking for a bike to take out to Boulder, CO for college in the fall. His budget is $1000, and I think he's open to buying used. I imagine that he needs something relatively versatile, but I think that he's looking to get a hardtail. What do you all recommend?

Why not buy one there? Just ride whatever in the summer and find out from locals there later on what's good. Visit the colorado forums here if you're really that inclined on riding one a couple of months and then packing it to take to college. I'd advise focusing on doing well in studies, not on fun with after school activities, especially if he's going to be a freshman.

More people browse that forum than this one anyways.

College isn't for studying, it's for partying, then riding when the hangover goes away the next day.

Seriously though, everyone in Boulder has like 4 bikes. If I were him, I'd wait until I got there to buy one, especially if he's buying used.
He's looking to get something and have it shipped to a friends house in boulder, or to buy it when he gets there. He's just doing research now to narrow it down to a few solid bikes to keep an eye out for on the used market.
KHS 650-606 would be on my list unless he's looking for an AM HT?
the KHS is 650B isnt it? I think he wants to stick with 26"
