I am following Joe Freil's program for mountain bikers (obviously). I plan to peak for a race in early April. However, this puts me doing intervals in early February. Is this too early for high-end stuff? Is it a recipe for disaster? My season will likely go through September, with my biggest peak in June for two NMBS races.

I think you'll be okay. As long as you have sufficiently long race periods (4-6 weeks), and perform them properly (one interval session a week emphasizing your personal strength, and preping for races on the weekend), stick in a transition week, then you should be feeling pretty good by the next time you start your build period/s for the following peak.

You should probably stick in a third peak in late august/september. Probably have a two-week transition prior to building for the last peak. Some time away from the bike will help deter burnout.
