i am 5 10" with 31.5 inside leg
im after a giant XTC 20" large too big, 18" medium still feels like a stretch to the bars & with seat at its lowest extreme tiptoes to the ground!
no smalls in store to try out but will be ordering online any way
will a 16" small be ok do you guys think?
top tube length on small xtc is 57.5cm with a 100mm stem
a talon 18" medium which felt comfortable has 57cm top tube with a shorter stem

Well, if the seat is all the way down and toes are just touching the ground on an 18" bike, then yes, it looks like a 16" is right for you. You may need to change the stem for a comfy stretch out, though.

Go with what feels right to you, but a 18 should fit just fine, I am 5' 7" and ride a 17.5 with 70mm stem

Something's wrong here. At 5'10" tall, a medium or large frame should work. Definitely not a small. My friend is 5'10" and rides a large(19" Enduro) with a short 90mm stem. Another riding buddy is 5'8" and rides an 18" RM Slayer with a 90mm stem.

I thought this sounded a little wierd to, Like I said I an 5' 7" and I only have a 30" (barely) inseam. I ride my 17.5" Felt, 18" Raleigh, and 17" Jamis, All of these fit fine me fine, but the 17" is certainly the smallest I would ride.

Yeah, I kind of forgot the 5' 10" part when he said "with the seat all the way down on the 18" frame,my toes barely touch the floor. Which is why I originally told him to get a small. Maybe he was sitting on a phone book? LOL!

i would be assessing your fit on the riding positions on the bike rather than when you are standing trying to put your feet on the ground. if the medium feels like a stretch, you can always adjust the fit with different stem and moving seat forward. small may be too small. i am 5'7" with a 28 inch inseam and ride smalls and had a few mediums.
